The school is holding its first book fair in the new building, and the first since 2003 at the old school, said Librarian Alyssa Littrell. Parents' Day is today from 3-7 p.m.
The fair, sponsored by Scholastic, runs through next Monday, Littrell said, and since this is the first book fair in a decade, she has not set a sales goal.
"My goal is to get the kids excited about reading," Littrell said, "to get people excited about the library and books."
Scholastic provides a turn-key book fair, she said. The books were shipped to Harris inside mobile shelves that unfolded and were ready to sell, she said. Credit cards may be used thanks to a Scholastic card machine that is operated via wi-fi.
The library benefits from each book that's sold, Littrell said. In addition to shopping for their children, parents are also invited to buy gift certificates for teachers or books from teachers' wish lists, she said.
Littrell said she plans to build upon this book fair once students and parents get used to the concept.
The first-year librarian, said her favorite books for sale are "Divergent," "The Host" and the "Beautiful Creatures" series.
"Hopefully, it will get bigger next time," she said. "That's our goal."
To buy books online: Go to http://scholastic.com/fair and search for Harris Middle School either through ZIP code 37160, with a 10 mile radius, or click on Tennessee, then on Shelbyville. Selecting the school means Harris' library will benefit from your purchase.
