Shelbyville Central started strong but faded in the fourth quarter in a 59-45 loss to visiting Smyrna in a non district matchup on Tuesday night.

The teams combined to commit a total of 49 fouls whick led to a combined 59 free throw attempts.

Shelbyville collected 25 fouls while Smyrna had 24.

Shots don't fall

Both teams failed to capitalize from the charity stripe as the Eaglettes cashed in on 10-of-24 compared to the Lady Bulldogs' 17-of-29.

"It was hard to really get into any flow on offense with as many fouls as we had. I'm very disappointed in our effort at the free throw line and we didn't shoot the ball any better from behind the 3-point line," Central coach Kevin Thomas said. "We've got to shoot the ball much better than we are now if we're going to be successful this season."

Shelbyville only made 3-of-19 3-point shots.

The Eaglettes were in command 14-11 at the end of the first quarter but were outscored 16-6 in the second period to trail 26-20 at the intermission.

Rally falls short

Smyrna took control of the game at the start of the second half, building a 12-point lead before the Eaglettes rallied to cut that advantage in half and trail 42-38 going into the fourth quarter.

Smyrna post player Brianne Alexander, a Austin Peay signee, took over the game inside the paint, scoring 12 of her 18 points in the final period to put any hopes of an Eaglette comeback to rest.

"They did a good job of getting the ball into the post player in the fourth quarter and we just couldn't stop her," Thomas said.

Jameka Braden led Shelbyville with a game-high 20 points while Olivia Calvert finished with eight, including a pair of treys.

Allie Bolton added 11 tallies for the winners.
