Grandparents deserve a say

To my fellow Tennesseans:

This letter is in regards to the disturbing statistics concerning our children. My name is Sharonita Liles and I am an active advocate for grandparents' rights.

For too long, we as a society have watched quietly while our young children have been, and still are, mentally and physically abused, neglected and abandoned. Many of these scars are permanent and have profound effects on innocent children. Too many of our children are turned over to the foster care program when other options are being ignored, the most ignored of these being the rights of the grandparents.

Over the past year, I have been writing letters to my state representatives, judges, etc., to try and bring about a long-overdue change to strengthen these laws pertaining to the grandparents. We cannot afford to sit by and continue to watch our chidlren pay the cost of our lost efforts. We see how the DCS system has let us all down by not providing our children with the protection promised by law. In my opinion, one child lost is too many! Why not give these grandparents a chance?

We all have a part to play in this reform process. The time is now to protect our children and give them a chance for a bright, promising future. I will continue in my efforts to raise awareness to this issue and take any and all necessary steps to protect our children. I pray this does not fall on deaf ears. Do not hesitate to contact your state representatives to voice your concerns and opinions regarding this urgent matter. Together, we can make it happen. We must unite to save our children. The time is now! Please respond, and thank you for your time.
