DECATURVILLE -- The Community Vikings started their tour of Tennessee in winning fashion Monday night, defeating Decatur County Riverside 10-8.

"This is the best win we've had since I've been at Unionville," Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said. "Playing at their place, and with the tradition they have, and three state championships, it's really big."

Riverside won Class 1A state championships in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Early impact

Community opened the scoring with two runs in the first. A Kyle Davidson single, followed by a Taylor Paschal double, put runners on second and third. Gabe Warrick drove in the first run of the night with a sacrifice fly, followed by a Quinn Frost run-scoring single.

The Panthers came back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The Vikings tied the game at 3-3 in the third. After a Frost walk and Dillon West single, Austin Cagle delivered with a run-scoring single.

Community widened the lead to 7-3 with a four-run fourth inning.

Stronger lead

Davidson and Paschal each had RBI singles, followed by Warrick's sacrifice fly. Cagle drove in the final run on another RBI single.

The Vikings extended their lead to 9-3 with two runs in the fifth. After a Davidson double and Paschal walk, Warrick extended his RBI total to four in the game with a two-run single.

Community added one run in the sixth, with Ryan Fears connecting on an RBI single, to go up 10-3.

Two errors, a single, and a grand slam enabled the Panthers to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the margin to 10-8.

But Riverside could not score in the seventh, leaving the Vikings with the win.

Sixteen hits

The Vikings pounded out 16 hits, with Davidson leading the way with four hits, including a double. Paschal added two singles and a double, while West and Cagle each had two hits. Warrick led the Vikings with four RBIs.

Paschal pitched two innings to get the win for Community. West pitched the middle three innings, with Frost hurling the last two to get the save.

Community travels east to play in the Farragut Invitational in Knoxville. The Vikings play at Christian Academy of Knoxville, ranked sixth in Class 2A, on Thursday. Community travels to South Doyle, ranked fifth in Class 3A, on Friday. The Vikings conclude their Knoxville trip with a game against Heritage Christian at CAK on Saturday.
