The Community Viqueens took a tough Smyrna team down to the wire on Friday night, but ultimately lost 63-58 thanks to a tough second quarter.

The Smyrna Lady Bulldogs got off to a quick start by taking a six point lead just a few minutes into the fourth.

The Viqueens quickly erased the lead by buckling down on defense and feeding the ball to one of their biggest offensive threats on the night, Lacey Reed.

Reed worked hard to get open in the post all game long, scoring 20 points, burning the Lady Bulldog defense, and keeping the Viqueens in the game.

After tying things up midway through the first the Viqueens were able to stay neck and neck with Smyrna, ending the quarter down 17-15.

Bump in road

With the break-neck pace the teams put forth in the first, it appeared as if the game could come down to a final possession.

However, things quickly changed for the Viqueens as their offense went cold.

Every three-point shot appeared to roll around the rim in the second quarter for the Viqueens and the Lady Bulldog defense became stingy, intercepting passes to the post and forcing the guards to turn the ball over.

While the Viqueens struggles the Lady Bulldogs flourished, scoring 21 points and pushing a two-point lead to 17 at the half as the Viqueens trailed 38-21.

Feeding the post

Trailing by 17 points at the half, the battle-tested Viqueen team began their comeback bid by working the ball to Reed in the post.

Reed dominated the Lady Bulldogs in the post, scoring 11 points in the quarter.

It was a two-point basket by Reed with just over a minute left in the third that cut the Lady Bulldog lead to 10, giving the Viqueens a chance to complete the rally.

Pierce in control

The Viqueens out-scored the Lady Bulldogs 15-11 in the third quarter and trailed by 13 thanks to a late three by the Lady Bulldogs.

With the comeback now in sight, junior guard Sarah Pierce took the game into her own hands.

The junior began driving the lane to score, blowing by Lady Bulldog defenders to score.

Pierce scored 15 points in the fourth quarter and hit a key layup to cut the Lady Bulldog lead to five with 11 seconds to go in to game.

The Viqueens out-scored the Lady Bulldogs 22-14 in the fourth, but there was just not enough time to finish the comeback.

Smyrna hit a couple of untimely threes to halt the Viqueens in a 63-58 loss.

Pierce led the way for the Viqueens with 23 points, she was followed by Reed with 20.

The Viqueens will hit the court after the new year on January 6th to face MTCS at home. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
