Rockets outblast Vikes in slugfest
UNIONVILLE -- Last season, the Community Vikings defeated the Forrest Rockets four times in a four-week period in en route to the district and regional championships, and then to the state baseball tournament.
But Monday night, the Rockets had the best of the Vikings, defeating Community 16-6 in the district opener for both teams.
The Rockets got on the scoreboard with two unearned runs in the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead.
Forrest upped its lead to 6-0 in the second inning, with Landon Jones landing the big hit with a three-run homer.
The Vikings (2-1, 0-1 9A) cut the lead to 6-1 in the third. Darian Pride reached on an infield hit, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Kyle Davidson.
The Rockets expanded their lead to 14-1 in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs on only two hits.
Facing a five-inning game because of the 10-run lead rule, the Vikings put on their hitting shoes.
After a walk to Tyler Broiles and singles by Pride and Jared Maupin to load the bases, Robby Gray drove in two runs with a double.
Davidson followed with a three-run blast over the left field fence, cutting the lead to 14-6.
Forrest scored two runs in the top of the sixth to end with the 10-run victory.
The Vikings were only outhit 10-7, but nine walks, two hit batsmen and two errors hurt Community's chances.
Davidson's homer and single led the Vikings, along with two singles by Pride.
Austin Cagle started on the mound for Community.
Gray came on in relief in the fourth inning, with Ryan Fears taking over in the sixth.
"We're way behind where we need to be," Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said.
"With the weather, you don't get the work you need, but that is everybody."
"The kids didn't quit," Davis added. "We hit the ball well. That's three games in a row we've hit really well."'
The Viki ngs travel to Chapel Hill tonight to complete the two-game series with the Rockets. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
