The Community Viqueens had to wait an extra hour to start their Region 5A quarterfinal game Friday night.

The delay did not faze the Viqueens.

The Viqueens won in impressive style, defeating the Clarksville Academy Lady Cougars 71-24 to advance to the semifinals of the Region 5A tournament.

Stayed focused

"It was something mentally that we had to overcome," Coach Allison Martin of the Viqueens said in discussing the delay as Clarksville Academy arrived well after the scheduled 7 p.m. starting time.

"The girls did a great job of staying focused and being ready for the game to start," Martin added.

Once the game started, Community (26-2) did not take long to assert itself.

After the Lady Cougars went ahead 2-0, the Viqueens scored the next 14 points and never looked back.

Spreading scoring

Sarah Pierce scored nine points to lead the Viqueens as six Community players scored in the first quarter.

The Viqueens led 23-6 after the quarter.

It was more of the same in the second quarter. Pierce led the way with seven points while Davie Barnes, Jordan Huntley, and Alyssa Freeman scored five points each as the Viqueens took a commanding 47-15 lead into halftime.

Lacey Reed and Logan Brothers each scored five points in the third quarter as Community continued to score at will.

The Viqueens ended the period with a 68-17 lead.

Subs step in

There was a running clock in the fourth quarter as Community substitutes played the entire quarter.

Pierce led Community with 20 points as nine Viqueens scored in the game.

Bailey Foote led the Lady Cougars with 11 points.

The Viqueens were 10-of-17 from the free throw line.

"I thought we did a really good job pushing the ball up the floor and moving the ball on offense," Martin said.

"It seemed like we found the open girl," Martin added.

Everyone plays

"I thought everyone did an excellent job tonight."

With the one-sided score, Martin had to ensure her starters still got some playing time in the game.

"I wanted them to experience a game where they had some playing time, but at the same time, I wanted everyone to stay injury-free," Martin said.

On the road

The tournament now shifts to McEwen where Community will face the host McEwen Warriorettes in a semifinal matchup Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

"Going to McEwen is tough, but playing them on their home floor is even going to be harder," Martin said
