Fighting Alzheimer's

To the Editor:

The Alzheimer's Association estimates there are more than five million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease and more than 15 million caregiver's. As an Alzheimer's Ambassador, it is my honor to represent them to our elected officials. I was honored to participate in this year's 28th Alzheimer's Association Advocacy Forum in Washington D.C. I joined 1,200 individuals with the disease, caregivers and fellow advocates from across the nation, we appealed to our members of Congress for action on Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only cause of death among the top 10 without a way to prevent, stop, or even slow down its progression. Eliminating the disease will require increasing federal commitment to Alzheimer's/dementia research to a level that better reflects the impact of Alzheimer's disease on individuals, families and society.

This disease has affected me through my grandmother and many of my friends and clients as a nurse. I have been advocating for a cure for more than 15 years and feel I will see one in my lifetime with the help of research, this is why it is important to me to continue to give and educate others about this mind-stealing disease.

I would like to thank Rep. Scott DesJarlais' staff for meeting with our delegation to discuss the Alzheimer's crisis. I hope we can count on his support. It is only through adequate funding and strong implementation of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease that we will meet its goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer's.

Cynthia Thomas
