Vaughn denies retirement rumor
Tennessee Poet Laureate Margaret Britton "Maggi" Vaughn of Bell Buckle denied rumors Monday that she has, or is planning to, step down before the end of her current term in 2020.
"I'm not sure how it started," said Vaughn, but she called the Times-Gazette to say she has no plans to leave the appointed position.
"If I live that long, I'm going to serve," said Vaughn.
The Tennessee General Assembly votes to reappoint the poet laureate every five years. Vaughn has held the position since 1995; the state's only other poet laureate has been Richard M. "Pek" Gunn, who was appointed 1971 and served until 1994.
