After Moore County’s Clay Burnett hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go in regulation, all hope seemed lost for the Cascade Champions to find a way to eke out a win.

Despite trimming the Raiders’ lead to just a single possession with eight seconds left, Cascade took the tough-luck loss, 50-45 against Moore County on Tuesday.

Trailing the Raiders 47-38 following Burnett’s 3-pointer, Cascade rallied with the ability to get to the free throw line, and a pair of clutch 3-pointers.

Final seconds

With 19 seconds left, junior Chay Chumley drilled a trey that cut the Moore County lead to 47-42.

After sending the Raiders to the free throw line and a pair of misses, sophomore guard Brandon Heath drilled a second triple within 20 seconds to cut the Moore County lead to two points.

Though Cascade came through with a handful of clutch plays to reach within striking distance, the Raiders were able to shrug off the rally by connecting on 3 of 4 free throws in the clutch.

Cascade had its chances throughout the contest, but struggled with turnovers and sloppy play that allowed the Raiders to hold control of the lead for the majority of regulation.

Heath led Cascade with 15 points, while junior Landon Parker gave Cascade a pulse in the paint in the third quarter, scoring six quick points to help the Champs take a slim 25-24 lead.

Burnett leads

But the Raiders leaned on the veteran play of Burnett, who came through with a big 3-pointer at three-minute mark of the third quarter to give the Raider the lead for good.

Burnett’s 16 led the Radiers, which included four 3-pointers.

Heath’s 15 led the Champions, while Parker also hit double figures with 11 points.

Cascade struggled at the line, connecting on just 11 of 23 attempts on the night.

The Champions will be back on the road on Friday and will travel to Huntland for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
