Farrell’s shot gives Viqueens first 2A win
LEWISBURG — The Community Viqueens trailed for most of the game, but took the lead in the fourth quarter and used a late basket by Kailyn Farrell to defeat the Marshall County Tigerettes 43-42 in their Class 2A district debut Tuesday night.
The Viqueens used a trey by Haley Reed to take a 3-0 lead in the first minute, but their lead was short-lived as the Tigerettes went ahead and led 11-5 after the first quarter.
Farrell scored four points in the second quarter as Community (8-7, 1-0) matched the Marshall County output. Each team scored 10 points as the Tigerettes took a 21-15 lead to the halftime break.
Five different Community players scored in the third quarter as the Viqueens inched their way closer to the lead. The Viqueens outscored the Tigerettes 12-9 to cut the Marshall County advantage to 30-27 heading to the final quarter.
Reed came through again with her second trey to start the quarter to tie the game at 30-30. The game was nip and tuck the rest of the way as the Viqueens were effective from both the outside and inside. Gracie Simmons led the way with five points while A.K. Lemmons and Lexie Cagle both connected on three-pointers to set up the theatrics in the final seconds.
With the game tied at 41-41, Farrell put in the go-ahead basket with 10 seconds left to put Community up 43-41. The Tigerettes then looked to tie the game after hitting the first free throw of a two-shot foul, but could not connect on the second as the Viqueens escaped with the hard-fought win.
Simmons scored 11 points while Farrell added 10 to lead the Viqueens.
Leah Hollingsworth led Marshall County with 12 points.
Community survived a huge differential at the foul line. The Tigerettes were 16-of-31 at the stripe while the Viqueens were 5-of-8.
