HUNTLAND — After struggling to begin the District 8-A schedule in the start of the new year, the Cascade Champions picked up their first league win on Thursday night at Huntland, defeating the Hornets 69-55.

Junior big man Landon Parker dominated for Cascade in the paint, leading all scorers with 23 points.

The 6-foot-7 center exploded in the first quarter for 10 points, leading the Champions to the 13-5 advantage.

While Parker’s hot-shooting first quarter gave the Champions the early boost, Cascade tacked on 19 more in the second quarter.

Height helps

Freshman Ethan Swan continued to exploit the Champs’ height advantage with six points of his own in the lane, while guards Brandon Heath and Chay Chumley added five and four points, respectively, in the quarter.

At the break, Cascade led 32-16.

As good of a first half as Cascade put together, the second half proved even more fruitful with seven different players penciling their name in the scoring column in the third quarter.

As a team, Cascade piled on 21 more in the period and held a decisive 53-26 lead after three quarters.

Late threat

But as well as the Champions played, the Hornets were able to rattle loose for 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Cascade added 18 of its own to shrug off the comeback bid.

Bryson Foster and Cameron Reed led the Hornets with 15 and 10 points, while Parker’s 23 led all scorers.

Heath added nine as well, while Chumley finished with eight.

The win marks the first district win of the year for the Champions that have struggled to find consistency on the offensive end of the court and gives Cascade some momentum heading into another District 8-A tilt on Tuesday in Wartrace against Eagleville. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
