Eagleville hands Viqueens loss
UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens and Eagleville Lady Eagles scored the same number of points in their District 6-A volleyball match Tuesday night.
But the Lady Eagles made the big shots in the three sets that went down to the wire as the Viqueens fell in four sets.
After Community defeated the Lady Eagles in their last two matches of the 2017 season, including a victory in the district tournament, Eagleville was ready for revenge in this season’s opening matchup between the two schools.
The Viqueens (2-1, 1-1) played catch up for most of the first set. After falling behind 13-7 and 18-12, Community battled back to within one at 22-21. The Viqueens served at 24-23, but Eagleville got the break on a net ball to close out the set.
Community played its best volleyball in winning the second set. The Viqueens never trailed and broke out of a 10-10 tie with four straight points en route to a 25-17 win.
The Viqueens started using angles to come up with points in the third set. Community went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 14-14, but could not sustain its momentum as the Lady Eagles rebounded with a 6-0 run of their own. The Viqueens came back with five straight points to tie the set at 22-22, but Eagleville scored the last three points to win the set 25-22.
Community seemed ready to send the match to a fifth set after racing to an 8-1 lead in set four.
But the Lady Eagles used a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 advantage.
The Viqueens got within two points late, but could not get over the hump as the Lady Eagles closed out the match with a 25-22 win.
Community returns to District 6-A play Thursday night with a 6:30 p.m. match at Fayetteville City.
