Phillips backs small farms
To the Editor:
Small farms need a voice in Washington. Scott DesJarlais sits on the House Agriculture Committee which tried and failed to pass a version of the farm bill that would slash programs that help small and beginning farmers, as well as rural residents in our district.
When I called his office to ask about this and to urge him to support the Senate version of the farm bill (which does not cut grants to small and beginning farmers), I was told that the Farm Bureau does not back the Senate version. Well, I did not vote for the Farm Bureau! While they do some good, they also advocate for corporate agriculture, and own hundreds of for-profit insurance agencies.
I want a representative that listens to me and not to the lobbyists. Small farms and rural communities thrive together and we deserve politicians who understand that. I’m a farmer and I’m voting for Mariah Phillips for U.S. Congress.
