UNIONVILLE – Three first half fumbles and missed tackles in crucial situations put the Community Vikings in a hole they could not climb out of as the Cannon County Lions defeated the Vikings 53-14 in a non-region football contest Friday night.

After the Lions started their initial drive on the Community 15-yard line, the Viking defense appeared to be on the verge of a big stop. But on third down, Brady Cunningham broke several tackles and scored on an 11-yard touchdown run to give the Lions a 7-0 lead.

Community (1-3, 0-1) was its own worst enemy as the Vikings fumbled on their next two possessions. The Lions capitalized with two scores to go up 21-0 after one quarter.

The Lions kept the pressure on in the second quarter. The Cannon County defense recovered a Viking fumble and accounted for a safety while the offense scored four touchdowns as the Lions took a 47-0 lead into halftime.

"We turned the ball over in the first half and it put us behind," Coach Chris Grooms of the Vikings said. "The quarterback goes down and we're subbing people and then we lose Lane Williams."

"Once I lost him, it was just piecing it together," Grooms added.

Cannon County added its last touchdown of the night in the third quarter before Community made some noise.

The Vikings went 76 yards to score on their next possession.

After Community gained a first down, Blaze Bryson ran 49 yards on the final play of the quarter as the Vikings reached the red zone.

John Stanley proceeded to punctuate the drive with a 14-yard scamper into the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter. Bryson was successful on the two-point conversion.

Stanley, who ran a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown in his last game against Lewis County, came up big again, this time on defense.

The Lions reached Viking territory but fumbled the ball. Stanley recovered the fumble and dodged through and around Cannon County tacklers en route to a 68-yard return and a touchdown.

"Stanley's a great asset to our team. He's a ball player," Grooms said. "He gets out here and hustles and works hard every day."

Community entertains Eagleville in a region matchup next Friday night. Game time is 7 p.m.

"We'll try to get everybody healthy as we get ready to face Eagleville," Grooms said.
