A Bedford County deputy has been charged with aggravated rape in connection with an alleged incident in 2019.

Joseph Guthrie, 31, is accused of sexually assaulting an adult female in October 2019 at a home in Bedford County, according to a press release from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Guthrie was arrested Monday after being indicted by the Bedford County grand jury Wednesday of last week. He was released from Bedford County Jail on $35,000 bond.

The TBI began investigating the case in February at the request of 17th District Attorney General Robert Carter, the press release said.

Guthrie, a patrol deputy since 2017, has been placed on unpaid leave, Sheriff Austin Swing said Tuesday.
