Christmas Parade still on schedule

COVID-19 won’t stop Shelbyville’s Christmas Parade.

The parade will go on as scheduled Saturday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m., Shelbyville-Bedford County Chamber of Commerce officials told Bedford County Emergency Management Director Scott Johnson.

But entries are “way down,” Johnson told Commissioner Mark Thomas in response to a question at a meeting of Bedford County Commission’s law enforcement committee Tuesday.

“The Christmas parade is outdoors. That’s a huge plus,” Johnson said. “The Chamber will encourage people to wear masks.”

Johnson, who follows at the rear of the Veterans Day parade in his EMA vehicle each year, said he was encouraged by the actions of spectators.

“Most people were in pickup trucks wearing masks with their families,” Johnson said. “If people will do that we should be okay.”
