I try to embrace new tech, but Windows 8 is less than desirable.

  • 'They' Steve, who are they, is this the 'they' that owns my cell phone. Is this the same demented monster that takes total control over my remote. That little hand held key thingy that opens my car door. The little $200.00 digital camera that keeps asking for new batteries, 'they' tell me if I send camera to company with $89.00 check, 'they' will tell me the problem!

So Steve, if someday I meet 'they', it won't be pretty.

  • "They" gets around and disappears into the crowd when the other "they" ask for accountability. It is one huge conspiracy! :-)

  • I keep getting mail from yahoo, "we love you and we want you back".

I tried getting that chrome thing, hours later I deleted everything. But 'they' don't leave me alone, I have pop up blocker and they still sneak by.

Rotary dial, love it. The first time my 10 year old g'son saw one he asked, g'ma,"how do you work it". Lord help us all, I have a feeling this is not going to get better.

  • At first I had second thoughts about the webcam on the laptops but if those folks really want to see what I look like sitting at my desk, they are some sick puppies.

I wipe out all cookies and temp files every time I close down. Of course I also have firewalls and anti-virus/spy software and don't click on anything I did not got to purposely.

Knock on wood. I'll probably regret saying this stuff. :-(

  • Something kept running in the background of Windows 8 and I could not seem to stop it. I opened task manager, identified it and did an internet search, only to find others having the problem but no one identifying what the $%^& thing was or if it was needed.

I had not been on any websites to pick up a virus, etc., so I shut it down, only for it to open back up. Then it finally shut off and something else started running. Both consumed about 40-55% of my memory.

I was fit to be tied and very irritable yesterday but I am better now. The computer, with its Windows 8 is out of the house and back to the store. Aah, relief.

  • I am kind of surprise none of our techies have jumped on here to defend Windows 8 or at least give opinions. Everyone on vacation?

  • We recently updated to Windows 8 from Vista, after our old tower died. It took me about a week to figure it all out. But the first thing that I did do was to uninstall all of the apps that we had no use for.

We use Firefox, because you have a lesser chance of any type of virus, pop-ups, etc. I haven't had any problems with it. I also have most of the add-ons disabled. The only add-ons that I keep on is Flash and Adobe.

The only time that I have used Chrome is on a different computer, and that is just for cloud printing.

Internet Explorer is okay, but is too slow and has too many bugs in it.

The of the peeves that I have is that common programs that were included in 7 and before, now have to be bought or downloaded from the app store.

Viruses can be picked up off of almost everything on the net. Watching videos, commercials on the side of the pages, games, etc. Some recently have been passed around through people who have Yahoo mail.

I have our computers set so it doesn't remember history and it dumps the temps and cookies as soon as we close the internet. We also use the disk cleanup program every couple of days. We also make sure that everyday we dump the "zombie cookies".

  • Thanks PrpleHze

Do you use the W8 screen or default back to the standard desktop look?

Also, do you have a touch screen and do you use it?

  • I use the standard desktop. Mainly because we have different folders for homeschool. And, well, we like changing the pictures on the desktop. We use the W8 screen for couple apps like the Kindle and some games.

We don't have a touch screen (we still have a "dinosaur" monitor). We don't replace anything unless it breaks.

  • I did not want to replace the screen either but I thought maybe that was why is was acting so strangely. (in my mind, anyway)

  • I am very tech savvy, but I much preferred Win7 to Win8. I too recommend Mozilla Firefox [12] for internet browsing...far fewer "crashes." There are some definite benefits in the ease of use when running Windows 8, but I venture to say they do not compensate enough for the "bugs."

  • I am trying again tonight with another computer. So far things are working smoother, so maybe it was the computer more than the operating system, or both.

  • I have been a Windows fanatic since version one. After trying Eight demo in store, I have to say unless MS can come up with something better, I am on my last version with Win 7.
