Bedford Ramblings

I think I like blogging. Are you surprised? Got anything you want to talk about?

Note: The nature of the Internet makes it impractical for our staff to review every comment. Please note that those who post comments on this website may do so using a screen name, which may or may not reflect a website user's actual name. Readers should be careful not to assign comments to real people who may have names similar to screen names. Refrain from obscenity in your comments, and to keep discussions civil, don't say anything in a way your grandmother would be ashamed to read.
  • Another goal online is to breathe new life into MyBedfordCounty.com I created that probably two times longer than I have been blogging here as an information and community site.

About the only thing staying active right now is the Church site, but I would love more activity in other areas.

  • I guess I would "restructure" some of my comments on my own accord, if I had the ability to go back. Oh well.

It probably isn't any surprise that schools are on my mind again, with the test results from last year coming out, and common core being implemented. I don't know why I expect things to improve each year. It is always more of the same Chamber approved white-washing of the same depressing results. Now, with common core, I don't see it getting any better anytime soon, regardless of what is done locally. It is a sad time for public education.

  • As the grandparent of several grand and great-grandchildren, I'm asking that someone explain the purpose of common core education. What are the advantages and/or disadvantages? I'm trying to keep an open mind about this, but from what I've read, it only sounds like "dumbing down" for those students with exceptional abilities.

  • wish there was a way that we could know what's really going on in ur town as far as new businesses and growth...we catch bits and pieces here and there from zoning issues and what roads they are paving....yet I wonder if anyone is floating ideas of new restaurants a good grocery store or a wonderful bakery round here'....and then there is the thieves...have you noticed more break-ins and robberies lately...our wonderful little quiet town is shrinking and getting riddled with crime...there sure wasn't much traffic like I thought there would be during the horse show...I think within the next ten years it will die too...they are still being mean to the horses....they never learn it seems...hmm...Had a friend that caught a couple fish in the duck river above the dam..he said they were looking kinda rough...and to think I use to swim there as a teen...not now for sure....well I have rambled enough...maybe that will be food for thought...Hey anyone knows of have the recipe for a British candy called Turkish Delight...looking for an original recipe...I don't think it's Turkeyish!

  • A parent of a 3rd grader told me that she heard they are no longer teaching or kids how to count money, tell time, or write in cursive...because they felt it was no longer necessary....Is that true?

  • memyselfi I agree about being able to change a post. I'm not sure why but my eye seems to catch things only AFTER I hit post. Facebook and LinkedIn give you a grace period to re-edit, but maybe as I work on a full-fledged blog I will learn why this is not as easy as it sounds.

I am completely clueless about "common core" so I will be extremely happy to open a post on it. Probably in a few minutes.

chefgrape, I'll explore getting more detailed information. Maybe we could find out all the organizations that exist in Bedford County and then see if we can get a representative to keep us up-to-date on their progress.

  • Ukraine reporting---Can anyone explain to me the disconnect between the narrative that is being advanced by the main-stream media and the realities of what is actually happening? Am I missing something?

  • I started a separate blog post for this question memyselfi.
