  • I have said there was never a recession in the restaurant business. No matter where you went to eat lunch or dinner it is packed. That may be why there are over 50 places to eat here. When the downturn was at its worse stage it was still booming.

  • You forgot the River Cafe and Mercantile in Normandy.

  • Fast Food or meat and two veggies for most of them...Bill has a talent for great salads at Our House Too...and then there is pretty good Mexican fare at a couple restaurants and markets...wish we had a Pei Wei's...maybe an Appleby's....as a single guy I eat out a lot because it's cheaper most the time...so I tend to only eat a few items from a couple of our restaurants ....just something new or different would be great...I have been hungry for German food lately....I guess it's time to run to Manchester or Huntsville to get some..The City Cafe at University and US 231 in Huntsville is awesome....it's Greek and the menu is extensive. the portions are huge..and right when you walk in the door there are like 60 huge cakes and pies all decorated up to temp you...now were talking'....

  • Sorry chepgrape but the German restaurant in Manchester is out of business.

  • Well there yay go...Thanks for telling me..I guess I'll be Huntsville bound soon...I will be making home-made pizza tonight...just made the dough...now to go get some ingredients...I wonder if Krogers has oyster mushroom or pancetta..I doubt it...better just get pepperoni from the deli and get it over with...I can get it sliced, and enough for 5 pizzas for less then a buck...beats paying 3.49 for a pack of the Hormel.....I will share!..I can't eat a whole pizza by myself..I like it cold for breakfast if any is left.

  • Kroger does have pancetta -- I saw it there tonight. It's in the island with the specialty cheeses and meats in the deli section.

  • For the pizza I needed only a few slices and didn't want pay for a package I could have maybe used it up in other things...I did have to buy a whole package of mushrooms when I only needed 4 for the pizza, most grocery stores have them loose, but I'll use them up in other things..If I had bought the package of pancetta it would have sent the cost of my pizza way to much...I ask the girl in the deli if they had some and she didn't know what it was...I wanted slices of mozzarella and same issue...they had it packaged..and they didn't even have the smaller pepperoni to slice either I had to settle for sandwich pepperoni which was fine but it's twice the price due to weight...now this is a guess, but I'd say all together I made a wonderful pizza with black olives, beef, baby portabella mushrooms, onion, pepperoni, bell pepper out of the garden, and a mix of cheeses while spending only about 5.00 in food cost for a home-made, dough from scratch, gourmet pizza..If I had bought some ingredients prepackaged and the produce, and the crust,(which would have to be Boboli or ChefBoy R Dee), and the meats and cheeses, it would have been around 25.00 or more, and I would have probably thrown out some of the leftovers next week...I guess living single on a budget has made me vary frugal..however being retired and bored...it;s a challenge...by the way...I do save a lot with coupons as well!

  • Sounds like a trip tot he grocery helps the boredom.

I remember that you contributed a lot to a discussion about coupons a while back. I can't remember if it was one of my posts or someone else.

  • That e-mail link is back now. Somehow, Steve, your e-mail address had been deleted from your profile, and it doesn't show the e-mail link if that field is empty. Not sure what happened, but I've fixed it.

  • I have always been a fan of the Southern Cooking Mom and Pop type of establishments. I have been gone from Shelbyville a long time but back a few years ago on a trip back to Shelbyville we made a trip to a Home Cooking establishment either on Ledbetter Road or just off of it that offered Southern Cooking as well as soul food that we really liked. I am sorry but the name of it has escaped me. It was due North of the old 41 Drive In Theater location a couple of blocks over. Possibly on Reece (or Reese) Street.

  • I know the place you speak of..The name escapes me also...I want to say it was Gordens..was it the one that had a small southern lunch buffet in a house at the end of the street...I ate there twice, and it was great for soul food...I am not sure if it's even still there...great corn bread!....If It is the one I think it is...you turned left off 41 before Wartrace pike, like you were headed back in that quiet neighborhood.

  • Leeii and chepgrape . . . the place you are thinking of is Braylon's Family Restaurant on Flack Road.

  • Thanks jaxspike...bingo..It was ok for lunch....the time I went was not much to choose from I remember, but it was good...and speaking of the 41 drive-in...wow...had my first ever kiss at the 41 drive-in...hmm...41 yrs ago! I was twelve...the rest is confidential! "Those were the Days My Friend"

  • chefgrape and jaxspike thanks for filling in the blanks for me. All of us are definitely thinking of the same place. I ate there 3 times and I had the country fried steak, green beans, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and some great cornbread, and washed all of that down with sweet tea. Brings back good memories.

  • I found plenty of references to it on the internet but all numbers seem to be disconnected, so....I guess it is history.

  • Yes it's my understanding that they are now closed..I will be trying Millers grocery in Christiana Saturday night for the first time and hope to try the new restaurant in Wartrace called Jae Byrds this weekend...I will let folks know how it was..I am expecting good..they have both been recommended with a star for scrumptious!

  • It has been a few years, but we enjoyed Miller's. What a coincidence! We are going to Wartrace tomorrow too!

Hey, I also see where we have a new blogger. With a title of peas and carrots, I bet it the posts may deal with food. What do you think?
