  • Remember folks, you don't have to be a life-long member of Weed'em and Reap to qualify, just BE THERE. Nothing to buy, no commitments to make, just come and share the evening with a bunch of gardening fanatics.

If you are interested in indoor plants, there might be a few there to take home as well.

And of course a great group of friendly people who would love seeing the new folks just as much as their regular friends.

  • Can't wait, I have really enjoyed and appreciated the fellowship amongst new and a few old friends.

If your looking for a reason to get out of the house or just want to meet a few super nice folks it's a great place to start.

I was interested in gardening as a chef but mostly in cooking what was grown...I've found these casual, come as you are, meetings, not only informative but fun.

Because we have been alternating between a conversational laid back meeting and then a social outing like a local restaurant on occasion, it has not only held my interest but kept me active as a single person.

I'm hooked now, can't wait to win the mini compost...good luck on that door prize drawing, we'll know soon enough...Ya Reckon!

  • You are usually the first one there chefgrape so your actions support your words. (Not that I doubted that)

For those who wonder what goes on in those meetings, the "social" one is just that. We share the company of friends and the conversation could go anywhere and often does.

Our more structured meeting doesn't have a lot of structure unless we have a guest speaker or presenter, but we do try to keep 90% or more of the conversation to be around gardening.

I would normally throw in a few goofy comments about our dress attire or rules and regs but I don't want someone to read that and jump to conclusions. There is no dress code and there are no real rules, regulations, officers, etc.

We do need to get back on the topic of the garden on the Square but other than that this program is a mix of comments, research on the internet and sharing our gardening experiences.

  • We've added a picture of the book and squash to be given away at the meeting. Since the squash are so big we will split them if more want to try a sample.

If anyone wants to bring other produce, flowers or seeds, you are more than welcome to do so. Nothing for sale, just trade or give away.

  • I've been thinking about those squash seeds that floated chefgrape. It is possible that the hull of the seed is greater than the live seed inside so maybe they will float anyway. They have their own little floatation device to help spread the seed during heavy rains, or floods.

  • I think they will be ok, they are still drying a bit...I'll bring my chef knife in case we need to cut one of those squash...I'd like to try another round of a few seeds to see if I "do better" this time.

I'm still kind...of undecided about what to make with this squash flesh I have thawed, it's looking like a vegetable lasagna.....so come hungry

  • Compliments of chefgrape.

By the way chefgrape, are you still having challenges with squirrels eating your tomatoes? If so, I might have a solution. DE (diatomaceous earth)

For those who don't know DE is the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae from a "few" years ago.

When they grind it up it makes sharp little splinters that penetrate the joints of insects and lets the "juice" out (dehydrates them) It does the same for soft body insects as well.

Anyway, we were applying it to PITA one time for flea control and her head zigged when it should have zagged, resulting in some getting in her eyes. Despite washing the eyes for about 10 minutes, she was a sorry, puffy eyed, site for a few days.

I would imagine that it would do the same for squirrels, especially since they could not sit under a faucet for a while. If DE is sprinkled on the plant, I think they would get some in their eyes from trying to climb it or shake the tomatoes loose.

It should not take long for them to decide tomatoes were not worth it. Whatcha' think?

  • Speaking of squirrels I have not seen any for awhile...or many birds on the feeder..guess I better get some new feed in it,it's low...

Those pesky squirrels haven't bothered my tomatoes "yet"...but I'm fixing to get the first ripe ones maybe the first of next week...

Thanks for the info! it will come in handy...they are vindictive little boogers!...shoo them they bark at you and sneak right back.

  • BY the way chefgrape, you have a lot of reading to do, or open a bookstore. You seem to be a magnet for the book drawings we have at the meeting.LOL

Next meeting will be a social one and I was outside at the time but I understand we will meet at Bocelli's, is that correct?
