Oriental eggplant Ping Tung with a yellow squash and Japanese cucumber
Yup, that's right, I am getting an early jump on announcing the meeting of the our garden club. I want to make sure you have plenty of time to schedule us into you 4th of July celebration weekend.
It will be at our regular meeting location, the UT Ag Extension office 2105 Midland Rd. Shelbyville, TN 37160 starting at 6:30 PM on July 3rd
Soil preparation has been hot on my mind,(I mean HOT)since I have been experimenting with a recycled product to loosen clay soils. I am a strong proponent of adding mulch/compost to the soil to feed the plants, soil organisms and loosen the soil, but our heat uses that up in almost one growing season and it is getting hard to keep up.
If this new experiment works, I won't be adding as much each year. Just enough to feed the plants and soil organisms. That adds up to nearly 3" saved and many sore muscles used for something else.
We FINALLY got some rain last night. On the soil filled with compost, the rain filtered down about 3", so we need more. ON the unworked grass area, it went down less than an inch and on the recently tilled soil with this experiment, the water reach over 4". I'm excited.
Of course, the original work still had to be done so I am tottering around and moaning each time I get up, but I believe it will be worth it.
I planted several types of squash, Chinese melon plants, eggplants and swiss chard that I started in pots. From seed, I planted acorn squash, corn, bush lima and green beans, plus cowpeas, spinach, sweet corn, and beets.
Later today I will plant a row each of Dwarf Long Pod Green and Clemson Spinelsss Okra to keep peace in the family. (I'm not an okra fan) SURE hope it rains some more!
The wind from last night's storm wreaked havoc on my tall plants in the bales. Mostly the tomatoes but also the climbing squash and cucumbers. All were restorable though.
For the first year in MANY, I brought in a bowl of eggplant. They are small oriental eggplants and tender as can be. (we had some a few weeks ago) They should be longer according to the picture on the front of the package and maybe I picked them early, but they look JUST RIGHT to me!
