The Weed'em & Reap garden club will meet at Yamato Restaurant 729 N Main St, Shelbyville, TN 37160 at 6:30 this coming Friday August 28th. No formal meeting, just garden conversations.
How is everyone's garden? The heat was great for some things but if you just helped some weather the summer, now should be a re-birth. I tend to lean toward vegetables too much but it is getting time for a great fall flush of flowers too!
My tomatoes are starting to set fruit again, or at least those that survived the horned tomato caterpillar. Boy, they had a good year and the parasitic wasps missed a great feeding opportunity. Wonder if I need to introduce some wasps next year.
Better yet, what happened to my normal ones? The cold snap last winter? Maybe I need to see if I can help them overwinter. I never paid much attention to what they might need, or if I can do anything at all. For those who do not know me, I do not use insecticide.
Speaking of wasps, I was cleaning some volunteer tree sprouts in the day lilies when I realized I was surrounded by a swarm of these big copper colored wasps. Not sure if it was because of a little rain falling or I did not show fear, but they never stung me.
I did not show fear because I was not aware they were all around me. When I did, I just stopped what I was doing, stood still for a little while, then backed slowly out. Good thing my shorts were already wet from the rain. :-)
We were talking about deer at last garden club meeting. For some reason, we maintain an relaxed relationship. Maybe since food is all around them, they do not key in to the garden like they might in a more urban setting?
They often walk straight through my garden but rarely stop to taste anything. Even the rabbits are not an issue. KNOCK on wood!!
