The cnbc debate was a joke. If they aren't any more serious than to ask about comic books and fantasy football then they must have obtained their journalism credentials from a cracker jacks box.

  • Things haven't changed Steve.

Hillary is still a liar. She was fired for being a liar during Watergate and was proven a liar again with Benghazi. These serve as book ends with a career of lies in between, such as the whopper about being under sniper fire.

CNBC did show themselves to be the biased media that they are, but everyone with any common sense already knew that.

We are on a steady march to socialism/communism. Whether that is by natural progression, or by orchestrated conspiracy, does not matter. The facts remain constant.

Now, thanks to Boehner we have no limit on a national debt that has more than doubled under Obama. Our nation and our freedom is in serious trouble. Change you can believe in!!

  • None of these panel discussions would qualify as a debate. You can't have a debate with 10 people randomly tossing out their sound bites and bon mots to an assortment of questions. The CNBC version was unquestionably the worst. Even if some of the questions were valid enough, they were delivered in a less than neutral manner, allowing the targets to sideslip answering the questions by attacking the questioner instead. As a matter of fact, this tactic went over so well, I wonder if they will bother answering any questions next time (assuming there are any more.)

They will be having the next one on Fox Business soon. They may still get a few gotchas but no doubt will have a higher percentage of legitimate questions and will focus more on the economy. Would be nice to have a real debate but that won't happen.

  • We need to rework the definition of "lie" during the computer blog age. "Lie" was once reserved for deliberately making a statement that was known to be untrue. These days we use lie to mean that something was misstated, questions were avoided, the facts were misunderstood, we disagree, or simply that we don't like a person. The word "liar" has been tossed around so freely that it really has little meaning.

When it comes to being factual, there are exactly zero people running for president that get a passing score.... well, maybe Bernie Sanders, as I have not bothered to listen to much of what he has to say. And it does not seem that anyone cares. As long as our preconceptions and biases are pandered to, we are perfectly content with any claims, regardless of facts.

  • Fair share I am still waiting for you to tell me what I said was racist about Carson and anti-feminist about Fiorina. The candidates complained about Fox questions during that debate. If you cant answer tough questions you don't need to be president.Maybe they can ask each other the questions they only want to answer.

I'm sorry. This time I will type slower so maybe you can keep up.

    1)Carson is black

2)You said bad stuff about Carson

3)Using the PC logic we have learned over the past 7-8 years, you are therefore racist

Lets try this 1 more tine. Follow closely please.

    1)Fiorina is a woman

2)You said bad stuff about Fiorina

    3)Apply PC/left wing logic and tada!--you are anti-feminist

Now I know that the truth can sometimes hurt and it is worse when you have spent so long denying it. But the sooner you accept reality and deal with it, the better you will feel.

I agree we need a president that can answer the hard questions and deal with the tough problems. If only we could find THE ONE that will save us from fantasy football!

  • Lazarus. XxXx I kept hitting the 'like' button but it kept getting smaller. The word lie certainly does get used to mean a lot these days. 😉

Lies are still Lies and Liars are still Liars and when you listen to Hillary you can fully understand what a lie is.

Even the Republican Candidates have discovered that the Government Lies to the people and Steals from the people as well. They are finally waking up to the truth. There may be some hope for us after all.

Is it no wonder Hillary Lies? Did she learn to lie so well by listening to Bill or all those Government jobs she had or both?

The candidates have to please the Delegates and primaries who will in turn choose the Nominee for the President not the people. We are just arguing for the sake of it. Then the Electors vote for a Nominee and the Powers-To-Be puts who they want in Office to rule over the people.

Now you have to ask yourself, who do you want to rule over you? Hillary who will lie to you and bring in even more immigrants and give them free entitlements plus now she will have to feed the over 6,000 Felony Prisoners Obama is releasing from all the Prisons. There are no jobs for law abiding Americans, so where are the jobs going to come from for all the illegal immigrants and newly freed Prisoners?

Everyone wants to change the Tax Codes yet NO ONE IS SMART ENOUGH to change the Tax Codes. They will Violate the US Constitution if they try and only a Sovereign will be able to get legal tax breaks because of unconstitutionality.

Answers to Questions can change everyday with what is happening around the world today! What someone says he will do today to save the world won't apply next week, yet the brain dead voters will hold them to what they said that won't work any more.

Why is Obama putting more Special Forces in Syria to be bombed by Russia when there is nothing Obama can do the take Assad out of power? Oh I know what he is doing! He is placing sitting ducks in Syria to be killed by Russian Bombers. Hasn't anyone told Obama that Russia is bombing the Rebels Obama trained and now he is sending in more trainers to be killed. It looks like another Benghazi to be.

Russia can handle the Isis in Syria! Obama needs to go after the Isis he let build up in Iraq if he wants to kill someone. He could have helped the Kurds if he wanted to do something good for the world. They begged for help before Turkey bombed them. Obama is 6 years too late and 9 Trillion dollars short.

That's no problem now, The congress gave Obama an open spending account with no conditions, but are calling it "raising the debt ceiling".

Who is destroying America the most, Obama, Hillary of the Congress?

Time to put Trump in who has the intelligence and force to do some good.

Anyone else is only going to follow the Socialist form of government and not have the back bone to stand up to any Country or Powers-to-be.

I agree Trump has the best chance of making America great again. I'm sure he is smart enough to compare and contrast WW II and Vietnam. It is up to the civilian side to decide whether or not to go to war ( as opposed to slick hilly and b o in a back room). Then they need to get out of the way and let the pros get the job done. Enough of these nonsense rules of engagement they have now. I hope that when we end up in WW III we have someone ( like Trump) in charge that has enough sense to put the A team in and tell them "make us 3-0".

That song goes through my mind every time I see Hillary walk out on stage in her ladies ware with her arms swinging outward.

  • Hillary knew that Benghazi was not a spontaneous attack based on protesting a video. She said so in an email to her family and to the heads of state in Egypt. At the same time, she and her department, were propagating the spontaneous reaction narrative. Thus she knew the truth, but chose to lie=liar!

She knowingly lied, stated things she knew to be false. She did the same thing claiming she was under sniper fire just a few years ago. If that doesn't qualify as "Liar" then I suppose that no one, or nothing does.

Now, it may seem harsh to speak such truth, and I suppose it is. The use of the word "liar" conveys a lack of trustworthiness which is bound to be offensive to subject of such truth. Political correctness would have us to remove such words from our vocabulary and restrict freedom of speech under the guise of avoiding offending others.

People make mistakes and they can change. I have seen no such evidence in the case of Hillary Clinton. To the contrary, there is evidence of continuing, consistent, behavior and that being of speaking falsehoods, in other words LIES.

  • Fair share then I guess everyone on here is racist toward Obama and Hillary because they say bad stuff about them including you.Saying Carson is mixed up, makes no sense and Fiorina looks as if she is in pain does not make one racist or anti-feminist.This is suppose to be an opinion blog, you say what you think. Why do you think I can't?Sui I know how the electoral vote goes, the number of votes by the people does make a difference. Are you saying that if one candidate gets the most votes in all states by a land slide that the electoral can choose who the want?Tell that to Romney because the latino vote cost him the election.Under Bush there was 13 Embassy attacks,301 americans killed by terrorist, excluding 9/11 and 5000 in Iraq with no hearings. Under Obama 45 americans were killed by terrorist including Benghazi and 11 hearings on just Benghazi. All over weapons of mass destruction that didn't exist.

Welcome to the club lets be real? We have been called racist and anti-feminist for years just for saying the truth about b o and slick hilly. So when you say anything bad about Carson, why shouldn't I assume it is because he is black? It is my opinion you are a racist, and the more you deny it, the more I will think it. And I didn't say you couldn't spew your racist hate speach on here. I just politely asked that you not. Say whatever you want. After all, this still is America and at least for now we still have the the right of free speech. On the other hand, we have never had the right to not be offended.

    lets be real;

You have the right to say anything you want to as long as you don't injure anyone by your talk, like slandering them.

According to all the talk (everywhere and not just on here) All the Candidates are mixed up. I am the first to acknowledge this fact by calling them Brain Dead. In the first 2 debates all the Republican Candidates showed their stupidity by doing just what the Democrats said they would. In the 1st Democratic Debate all the Male Candidates conceded to Hillary without a single fight for the nomination. That was even more STUPID than what the Republicans done.

The Committee on Benghazi was also a waste of time. The Republicans didn't ask Hillary any questions about Benghazi except the same old stuff she had answered before. The Democrats wanted to know what happened at Benghazi so we could prevent it from ever happening again, so what did the Democrats ask Hillary? NOTHING! The Democrats didn't have one question they could think of to ask Hillary while she was available for all questions. The Democrats were all BRAIN DEAD when it came to finding out what happened.

Am I saying that if one candidate gets the most votes in all states by a land slide that the electoral can choose who the want? YES I AM, lets be real.

Don't you remember that Governor Jeb Bush told his brother George that he had won the vote in the state of Florida, JUST BEFORE the vote came out in favor of AL Gore!

Georgie Boy Bush cried like a whiny baby and asked for a recount which the state of Florida could not do because of a (LOT OF REASONS), and even tried to make the Supreme Court decide which they didn't want any part in their SCAM!

So WHAT DID THEY DO? They had the electoral revote for BUSH.

You don't see anything Fishy about that?

Latinos didn't have anything to do with Romney not winning. Romney didn't stand up to Obama and fight for the Presidency. The news Media also pushed the fact that he was a Mormon and convinced the voters not to vote for a Christian Mormon because it would be a Church and state government. - BRAIN DEAD - but it worked!

If your account is correct we can plainly see that your beloved OBAMA has done NOTHING!

Any President who doesn't do anything isn't going to have anything to brag about.

However, you are not counting all the lives of the Christians that Isis has murdered while OBAMA did NOTHING!

You didn't count all the Muslims that Isis has Murdered while OBAMA DID NOTHING!

You did not count all the girls who were kidnapped from the schools in Africa by the Terrorist while OBAMA SAT HERE AND DONE NOTHING!

You did not count the Ukrainians Killed by Russia who were our allies that we were suppose to help while OBAMA DID NOTHING!

You did not count the Kurds who were murdered by Isis because when they begged the United States to send them weapons to fight with, OBAMA DID NOTHING!

You did not count all the Black citizens in Egypt that were murdered by the Muslim Brother hood as Spies after OBAMA Took out the Egyptian Leader and replaced him with radical Muslims then sat back AND DONE NOTHING!

You Did Not count all the Iraqis that were driven out of their home to die of starvation or gunned down as they were leaving their homes.

You did not count all the men, young and old, who were beheaded and the women who were taken to be sold as sex slaves or become wives of Isis fighters.

You did not count all the people OBAMA HAS BOMBED in Syria trying to get Isis headquarters.

You didn't count all the Syrian Rebels that OBAMA TRAINED that left to go fight for Isis.

You did not count all the Syrian Rebels and Special Forces who are being bombed by Russia nor the 50 being sent there now.

You didn't count all the Syrians Refugees that have to flee their country because of Isis while OBAMA DOES NOTHING!

Lets be real, I think you need to recount the people that OBAMA HAS KILLED OR ALLOWED TO BE KILLED by HIS NOT DOING ANYTHING!

And I haven't even started on what he has caused right here in America!

Hillary will follow in OBAMA,S FOOTSTEPS if she is elected!

TRUMP is the only MAN who is smart enough to take charge and reverse our GOAL to SUCCESS!

I will say this also. Racism is a thing of the past! It is the Democrats that are bringing Racism back in the face of the people.

Think back to the way it was. If the Democrats and the blacks don't stop it, we may wind up back in the past again.

The Black Lives Matter Groups are shutting down the People Forces, so America will have to go with an unconstitutional Martial Law (Which the Government would love to see happen because we wouldn't have any rights and there would be no law to control them) or the KKK will have to step in and eliminate the Black Racists. The majority of Blacks are content with our country. It is only a handful who are making it hard for everyone. RACISM BY THE BLACKS NEEDS TO STOP NOW!

  • What about Carson lying that he did not know much about the supplement from Mannatech? The company had to pay out 7 million for false advertisement in claiming to cure cancer and autism. He made speeches for money about the product and videos showing he knew about the product even after the lawsuit. Is it racist to mention that?

    lets be real;

I do not see anything Racist about that.

However I watched Ben Carson explain what happened.

I said he was not asked to have his photo in the advertising. It was done without his permission.

He also said he liked the product itself and used it himself, so he admitting to telling people about the product he used and liked.

To go any further would be to go to court to get down to the truth.

I find the Black Lives Matter movement interesting. They say black lives matter. But they don't care about black cop lives. As a matter of fact, they want to kill them. Maybe we should call them the Some Black Lives Matter movement. But wait! They sure don't care about all the little black babies being aborted every day. And not a word about all the blacks being killed by other blacks in the inner cities. Come to think of it, we really should call them the A Few Black Lives Matter movement. If they don't think all lives matter then they are morally retarded. The only black lives they seem to care about are the ones that get killed while trying to kill cops or causing trouble.

-- Posted by fair share on Sun, Nov 1, 2015, at 4:23 PM
  • Was the 12 year old boy with the bb gun in Ohio causing trouble? What about the macho cop that flipped the girl backwards in her desk and threw her across the room. I know she refused to get off her cell phone, but that was a school discipline problem not a crime. If a parent did that to her child they would be arrested.Black kids are expelled at a higher rate than whites. While schools are concentrating on black kids talking in class or using cell phones, the white kids are shooting up the schools.I will say this again if black lives had mattered there would be no need for the black lives matter movement. The same thing was said about the civil rights movement in the 60's when blacks were told to stay in their place and not march.Black live matter movement is for stopping police brutality not anti-police.Sure a few chanted some bad things about cops, but that's not the whole movement.

As far as Carson goes selling a product even after a lawsuit determined it was all a fraud, shows he does not use good judgement or it didn't matter as long as he was getting paid.Have any one watched the videos of him supporting the supplement?

-- Posted by lets be real on Sun, Nov 1, 2015, at 5:46 PM

    lets be real;

As I remember the story the 12 year old was scaring adults in a park with a gun that looked real. Some one called the police and reported a kid in the park chasing people with a gun. When the cop got there the kid had a gun that looked like any other gun. When he pointed the gun at the cops one of them shot him because that is what cops are trained to do when someone points a gun at them.

It's a shame but it happens.

The cop was a deputy assigned to the school for disturbances. He was called in and the girl didn't obey the officer's command. She even swung at him and hit him in the face. That alone is a serious crime to hit a cop. That was resisting arrest so the cop had to take stricter measures to subdue her.

The cop was in his right to pull the girl out of her chair in order to handcuff her. Had she had been doing what she was told to do, she could have avoided all of this and her parent's bail money and arrest fine and court costs.

The Black Lives Matter Organization is criminal. There is no other way to put it. They tell the Blacks to kill cops, when? Right Now! There is no way you can deny what the BLM Organization is telling the blacks to do because the BLACKS go out and shoot Cops, and the crazy BRAIN DEAD BLACKs kill their own BLACK COPS too. How does that prove Black Lives Matter?

You need to wake up from your dream and start thinking for yourself and stop defending MURDERERS.

The girl purposely disrupted the class then refused to obey the law official in charge of dealing with the problem. The girl chose to make the problem worst for everyone.

She is no doubt, along with her parents, paying a huge amount of money for her disruptions and disturbances. Hopefully she has learned a hard lesson, but I really doubt it!

Like I said, Carson said he liked the product and had no problem telling people what it done for him.

-- Posted by sui on Sun, Nov 1, 2015, at 6:40 PM

Yes. The kid waving the gun around was causing trouble. It may have been a bb gun but looked like a real one--no orange tip. And waving it around when cops are approaching ain't the smartest thing to do. And the girl disrupting class brought it on herself. After hitting and spitting on him she still resisted as he tried to get her out of the chair. What part of follow lawful commands and don't resist do these people not get? They get it and that is their tactic. As far as Carson goes, lbr?'s starting to sound like Charlie Brown's teacher--"waah waah waah ".

-- Posted by fair share on Sun, Nov 1, 2015, at 6:52 PM
  • Yes. If it looks like a gun, it is a gun. And it does not matter how old the finger on the trigger is. I feel sorry for the officer, who now has to live with having shot a child with a BB gun. No matter how justified, that would be a burden to live with.

But the SRO gets a big no. If you cannot deal with a rebellious, maybe even obnoxious teenager without resorting to physical violence, you do not belong in the schools. I saw the tape. The girl may not have been doing as she was told, but the "adult" initiated the physical contact. I don't think it is a new concept that two wrongs do not make a right.

-- Posted by lazarus on Sun, Nov 1, 2015, at 11:27 PM
  • Back to the original topic; candidates.

As I have said, we are far to free with the term lie. And I cannot say if this was a "lie," meaning there was an intent to deceive, but I was especially troubled by Christie's remarks on social security. I have learned not to be surprised by any lack of knowledge on the part of elected officials. However, Christie either revealed ignorance, of what seemed to be a major point to him, sufficient to disqualify him for any consideration as a presidential candidate... or it was a deliberate prevarication. Of course, I heard that social security was doomed when I was in High School, so that is nothing new. But the statement that the reserves have been "stolen" and replaced by "IOU's" is just ridiculous. By law, the reserves are put into Treasury Bills, drawing interest. How would the money be supposed to be handled, roll it up in old socks and bury it on the White House lawn? Stating that social security is "broke"; when the reality is that social security continues to build additional reserves, as it takes in more than it pays out. Stating that it will be "gone" in 6 or 7 years; when the reality is that we have nothing more than a prediction that, in 6 or 7 years, social security *might* have to begin to draw on the reserves. These are either ignorant statements or deliberate lies....but what was really troubling is that there are apparently enough people out there without a clue, that these outrageous statements were actually his strong point on the night.

And that is my main issue with the Republican primary. It seems like the only way for a candidate to get any traction is to invent all these imaginary catastrophes, which only they can save us from. Maybe no one else has noticed, but we don't need anyone to "make America great, again." It is great right now. The economy is not in a crisis. we are not on the verge of martial law. No one is coming to take our guns. We are not on the verge of implementing shariah law. We are safer going about our daily lives than any people who ever lived. Are there problems? Sure, there are problems. What we need are problemsolvers, not doomsayers.

You can't solve the problem until you see the problem. There is only the money coming in each month to fund social security. The reserves have been spent. b o stole a bunch not long ago to help fund obummercare. I guess 19 trillion in debt isn't a crisis since we can still make the payments. Should we wait til we can no longer pay the interest before we try to fix it? What is the alternative to the republicans? Comrade Bernie? Slick hilly? She wants you to think she will give you more "free" stuff than the admitted socialist. America was a great country and can still be one. But we have to quit being the worlds doormat first. It would help if the next president made a world "unapology " tour

  • Fair Share: How can you expect credibility with any statement you make, when you start with one that is absolutely, 100% wrong. The Social Security reserves are in place. The myth that they have been spent is simply make believe.

My non-social security retirement is also still there (what I have not already used, since I am retired) and it is there in the same way. They do not have my money rolled up in a sock and stashed in a vault. It is invested. (Banks do not keep your savings in a vault, either...They would not keep your money if it could not be invested, this is called Capitalism.) Your Social Security is safer than your private retirement accounts, because it is invested in the safest (if low yield) securities there are; Treasury Bills. The tale that social security has "been stolen" was made up to take advantage of people who do not understand how Capitalism works. It is a sad commentary on our society that such uninformed people represent enough votes to influence our presidential elections.

  • If the money is there why the need to raise the benefit age?

If that claim is just a scam, why would anyone continue to trust their retirement to people like that?

-- Posted by quietmike on Mon, Nov 2, 2015, at 7:10 AM
  • Obama and Hillary repeated the lie that Bengahzi was the result of a youtube video.

They said whoever made the would be arrested and prosecuted.

Now why would you support a candidate who would have someone arrested for exercising their first amendment rights, just to cover up a lie?

-- Posted by quietmike on Mon, Nov 2, 2015, at 7:17 AM
  • "If the money is there why the need to raise the benefit age?

If that claim is just a scam, why would anyone continue to trust their retirement to people like that?"

There is anticipation that the reserve will start to be used in 6-7 years. Responsible people would be looking at potential solutions decades before problems are anticipated... I think the bigger question is how the retirement age can be moved into people's 70's, when employers are increasingly divesting themselves of employees who are in their 50's, and no one is hiring people in that age group. Unless there is some change in corporate employment practices, they will have to think of a different solution.

Lazarus, I understand how capitalism works and how socialism works. I'm glad you have non-social security retirement. Too many people think SS is their retirement. It was never meant to be the whole thing. The funds that are there are just a stack of IOUs. That is what a bond (T-bond, T-bill, etc) is. They have to get that money from the taxpayer. I still have about 8 years til my full retirement age. If they would let me keep and manage my future payments into the system in return for not getting a penny back for all I have already put in, I would be all over that like salt on southern cooking. At the very best, the guvment has failed in its fiduciary responsibility to the SS participants. If a financial firm did the same to their customers they would be shut down. Of course they would not have many customers anyway. They would all be with a real financial planning/services company.

  • The reserve will be used in 6-7 years.

If the money being paid out is just the money put in by the same people, nevermind the folks who die before collecting any benefits, why is it a problem?

The baby boomers are now collecting Soc. Sec. at a rate faster than the next generations can invest. The solution is: they want to bring in millions of undocumented aliens to pay taxes and soc, sec. so they can continue to pay out.

It was determined that the life expectancy of a black person was 50 years. They would die before reaching the age limit for collecting Soc. Sec.. Now that isn't true any more, so that plan failed.

What investment company buys US Bonds to save their investments? The Bonds can not keep up with inflation and their investment would go bad.

The U.S. Government Steals the money under the lie of borrowing the money but in reality they trade the cash for worthless U.S. Gov. Bonds.

If you cash in the Gov. Bonds in 6 months or so you might make a profit but in the long run they can't keep up with inflation, and now the word is that US Money is losing it's value all around the world. Many Countries won't take US Dollars.

So yes, they have been thinking of ways every since I was a kid to make Soc. Sec. pay for itself. It's a Ponzi Scheme and it's done through the U.S. Mail. That makes it Mail Fraud. But because it is the U.S. Gov. that's OK!

Now let's l@@k at the latest scheme. Bring in Millions of Undocumented immigrants which Hillary intends to do far greater than Obama did.

We will have millions of foreigners who will claim unearned income on their income tax forms (if they ever file one) and get back every dime they paid in PLUS more (unearned income).

Most won't even get a paycheck because the companies will have to pay them under the table because they are undocumented. That means no Soc. Sec. Deductions either.

This will also cause many paid employees to lose their jobs because they can pay the undocumented freeloaders less money under the table.

This in turn will decease the Soc. Sec. that was being paid in by the higher paid employees, making the situation worse.

The only logical answer is to tell the people that Soc. Sec. is running out of money in a few years. Why don't they take the money they are refusing to pay the old people (because inflation hasn't gone up) and add that to the Soc. Sec.?

Here is a riddle for the people who know it all!

Why does Congress Raise the Debt Ceiling to Pay for all the Entitlement Programs (one of them being Soc. Sec.) that congress has already spent.

I have never in my whole life time ever received a Taxpayers Statement listing all the entitlement programs that taxpayers claim they pay for.

Could someone Please send me a copy of theirs?

Is it just added on to your Drivers License fee or tag registration or the hunting license? Maybe the marriage license or boat registration, or perhaps your property tax (if you have any property) which is unconstitutional, or is it added to a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of liquor or a 6 pack of beer? Just where is this taxpayers list of taxes they have to pay?

Congress has that list and it is paid by congress when they raise the debt ceiling. It doesn't come out of YOUR pocket. That is just another LIE that the Gov. tells you to make you feel like they have control over you because you owe them money!

Obamacare was designed to work just like Soc. Sec.. The young people who don't need high cost Operations and Medical attention would pay the majority of the money needed to run Obamacare, but the young people don't have the money required to sign up and pay into it. Obamacare is crashing already! It's just Another Ponzi Scheme the Gov. created to steal money from the people.

    Wake up people!

Hard to rebut the truth. Lazarus, I sure hope you are better taking care of yourself than the government is. Sui, Social Security is the only entitlement. We paid for it and we are entitled to it. People think there are so many other entitlements because that is what uncle sam wants us to believe. What people are really entitled to are sucking air, being left alone, and taking care of themselves.

  • The U.S is in serious financial trouble. This directly affects its ability to pay its debt. Those debts secured Treasury bonds are only as good as the ability to pay them when due.

Most any lender looks at debt to income ratio when deciding whether or not to make loans. Now most people want to compare the debt to GDP as a ratio. However, the governments income is not equal to the GDP. They cannot seize everything that everyone makes, at least not yet. Their income is only what they take in in revenue through taxation.

The current U.S. debt to income ratio is 408% which is third in the world behind Japan and Greece. This includes money taken in by Social Security. When social security is not included, that number jumps to 688 percent.

Here is a link that explains; http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffreydorfman/2014/07/12/forget-debt-as-a-percent-o...

Put simply, we are broke. Of course the government can just pass a law, increase taxes, and seize the property of the people to pay for their debts. This is what keeps the Ponzi schemes like Social Security going.

    Concerning leadership;

We need leaders who are visionary, not reactionary. Being able to see the failures on the horizon and take actions to avoid them. Doubling the debt, which is what Obama has done, or increasing taxes, which is what Hillary and Sanders want to do, is not visionary. It is reactionary which is a continuation of failed tactics of the past. That is the problem with Socialism. "Sooner or later you run out of other peoples money to spend".

  • Here is a link that explains; http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffreydorfm...

according to your link, the US is 11th, not 3rd. And the author makes note that most do not use the same comparison for a government as for a family... what you have is called cherry picking data. With your conclusion securely in place, all that is left is to seek out any piece of data that might seem to support it. Perhaps a more accurate assessment of treasury bills would come from the actual buyers. The Treasury Bill is considered the most marketable money market security. From Investopedia; "Other positives are that T-bills (and all Treasuries) are considered to be the safest investments in the world..."

At least it is easy to see why the candidates believe they can win the nomination by making outrageous statements.

-- Posted by lazarus on Mon, Nov 2, 2015, at 11:31 PM
  • Lazarus, apparently you didn't read down the page far enough. The U.S. is eleventh when comparing debt to GDP. It is 3rd when comparing debt to income. I suppose you can consider GDP as income, but that means you are OK with the government seizure of everything that you, and the rest of the country produces, for an entire year. GDP comparison to debt is not realistic and you talk about cherry picking!!

Treasury bonds have been considered the most secure in the world for 2 reasons. 1.) The U.S. dollar has been the world reserve currency and the U.S. is the only country that can print them. 2.)The U.S government can simply raise taxes on the largest pool of wealthy citizens in the world.

These two reason are being diminished quickly. Any rational person with vision can see it. The more the government takes, the less the people have, and, the more debt that is incurred for the people to pay. Treasury bonds will be a safe investment right up until the time that they are not. Then the house of cards will crumble. Then what will the government do? Seize everyone's' property? Again, we need visionaries not reactionaries.

I am glad you were able to receive your SS. I don't expect I will receive any after paying for all my life since most projections say it will be broke by 2033. SS is like any Ponzi scheme, it benefits those who get their money the soonest the most, everyone else is left holding the bag. The only reason it has continued for so long is because of death and increasing the taxes.

The left seems to hold to the idea that the government has, or is, an inexhaustible supply of money without realizing that they have nothing that hasn't been taken from someone else first. Or, they are completely fine with the government seizing OTHER peoples property/labor as long as it benefits them.

Again, "the problem with socialism is sooner or later you run out of other peoples money".

If a candidate can win with these ideas in mind, then there is still hope for the country, and we may avert running off the fiscal cliff we are headed for.

    Do Not Worry yourself sick.

Your money will be there when you are ready to retire. If it isn't the Congress will just raise the debt ceiling up enough to cover your Soc. Sec..

It is said that the taxpayers will have to pay the debt.

    Not gonna happen.

What part of the Debt are we paying now, urrh I mean you?

The debt hasn't been called in yet. No one is paying the debt off and neither will our Grandchildren.

We the people are not Bankrupt only the United States Government is Bankrupt. The U.S. Gov has made all the States a party to the Bankruptcy so the States will have to pay off the Debt.

The State Governments are corporations just like the U.S. Government, so they can be dragging into helping pay off the Debt (WHEN IT IS CALLED IN).

The State Governments DO NOT INCLUDE the People only Corporation and federal citizens.

That means when the time comes State employees and 14th Amendment Citizens (Documented Immigrants) will have to pay on the debt as State Employees. This would also include Cities, Towns, Villages, Municipalities and burgs that are corporations including the Uncorporated.

When the Debt is finally called in - YEARS FROM NOW - The U.S. Government will pay it off using the people's Cestui Qui trust.

This is another Money Account the U.S. Gov. is stealing from us that very, very, very few people even know about!

  • "the problem with socialism is sooner or later you run out of other peoples money".

Socialism: a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Another of my many pet peeves is the misuse of the term "Socialism." We throw it around as an almost random pejorative. There is a pervasive belief that welfare is socialism. The truth is, socialism is all around us, and even the most ardent haters of "Socialism" are equally as adamant that we preserve it. It has been only a few years since the "antisocialist" citizens of Shelbyville were up in arms at the suggestion garbage pickup be privatized... Guess what. Government Garbage pickup *IS* socialism. As are police, fire, roads, parks, public utilities, schools, almost everything that we think of as a government's responsibility. The one thing that is not socialism is welfare.

We could have a 100% Socialist government, and not provide a penny in welfare. Socialism is not welfare. We could have a 100% Socialist government with absolutely zero taxes. All that has to be done is run the government owned industries at a profit, and use that money to pay for government. Typically, government run industries are run at no profit, generally by law. Shelbyville Power has regulations controlling the amount it charges customers. If it were run at a loss, the State would step in and require rate increases. If it were to be run at too much of a profit, the State would step in and require it to lower rates.

I have not heard anyone call for the complete privatization of every government service. Because, the truth is, virtually all of us believe in some degree of Socialism. It is not hard to figure out that the entire economy would suffer if all roads were privately owned. The same could be said for electricity.

We may have our differences as to what industries should be privately owned, and which should be government run; but that is only a difference of opinion as to the appropriate level of Socialism.

-- Posted by lazarus on Tue, Nov 3, 2015, at 3:43 PM
  • I think Socialism is being confused with co-operation. Electric co-operatives are owned by the members who are not forced to participate.

Yes, I agree that socialism is all around us. So is the massive debt high taxation, and unsustainability that it causes.

    Why socialism fails;

Lazarus, you are right about the Theory of socialism. Sounds nice. We should all be sitting around the campfire holding hands and singing Kumbaya. And don't forget to put flowers in your hair if you go to San Francisco. But out here in the real world Utopian society experiments have failed just as the real world socialism. All the people that can do math know what the problem is with real world socialism--- sooner or later you run out of other peoples money.

  • Statists learned long ago there is a lot of wiggle room between the legal and operative definitions of ownership.

Government might let you keep the paperwork that says you own a business, but they install so much regulation and laws that it doesn't look anything like ownership that we understand.

Ask a Colorado bakery what the difference is between the two.

-- Posted by quietmike on Wed, Nov 4, 2015, at 4:27 AM
  • Lazarus,

A separate subject lead me back to the search for the definition of "Socialism". It is identical with your definition above except with a few other words that you "cherry picked" out. Here it is in it's entirety.

1.a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

    synonyms: leftism ˇ welfarism ˇ radicalism ˇ progressivism ˇ

Notice the inclusion of "welfarism" which you argued is not part of "Socialism".

Socialism destroys the incentive to be productive, provides a breeding ground for corruption, and ultimately fails. Democrats know that! That is why the left does not want to wear that label, even though they advocate it's use.

Cherry picking and rebranding the same ideas does not change the fundamental flaws.

Capitalism has it's flaws as well, but destroying the incentive to be productive is not one of them.

The real flaw is in human behavior and the tendency to "Plunder" others. Socialism provides a much more fertile ground for that to occur as "plundering" of the entire society is required in order to re-distribute the plunder.

-- Posted by Liveforlight on Wed, Nov 4, 2015, at 4:54 AM
  • Synonym does not necessarily mean that two things are the same. Part of the definition of "synonym" is "a person or thing so closely associated with a particular quality or idea that the mention of their name calls it to mind." Looking at the Synonyms you have listed, I see welfarism... altho welfare is not a part of socialism as an economic theory, and I also see leftism.... Altho the National Socialist German Workers Party was one of the furthest Right political parties of all time. Socialism and welfare are not the same thing.

You seem to have assumed that my objection to misusing the term indicates that I am a proponent of Socialism. To an extent, I suppose that is true. Certain functions are most efficiently performed by the government. Police and Fire are good examples. Roads and electrical are others. Going back to the example of garbage pickup, where (supposedly) anti-socialism Shelbyville was virulently opposed to privatizing the service or paying for it by a user fee, I would be more anti-socialism than the majority. I believe that those services the government provides should be paid for by user fees wherever it is feasible. There is no logical reason that all taxpayers should pay for Garbage Pickup, when not all taxpayers receive the service. Your "free" Garbage Pickup is, in reality, welfare. Someone has to pay. Business taxes, Property taxes unrelated to residential property, and all manner of tax money with no connection to receiving the service goes into the city's general fund, which provides the funding for your garbage pickup. It would seem that even those people who are most outspoken about welfare that goes to someone else, are quite protective of welfare that accrues to themselves.

-- Posted by lazarus on Wed, Nov 4, 2015, at 6:51 AM

"Free" garbage pickup is welfare only to those that don't pay taxes. Socialism (real world) would have a lot better chance of working if they enforced both sides of the common definition and did it across the board. They are real good at making some people contribute what they can but let so many others choose not to contribute at all. And they make it easy to choose not to contribute because they will take care of you cradle to grave. They give people way more than they need. People need air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, and basic shelter and healthcare. No one "needs" cable tv, internet, cell phone, booze or smokes. The idea of "good enough" has supplanted "better or best" for too many people. And I'm sure there are plenty of truly stupid people that really believe the government can take better care of them than they can take care of themselves (the koolaid drinkers on the left). And like Ron White says, "You can't fix stupid ".

-- Posted by fair share on Wed, Nov 4, 2015, at 11:13 AM
  • Maybe it is more like subsidized housing. User taxes don't pay half the cost of Garbage Pickup in Shelbyville. Most of the cost is paid by other taxpayers...primarily businesses and non-residential property tax. (said with a smile) this is one time you do not pay your fair share.

Typical. All you can tell me ( or anyone else) about my fair share is " it is more" . I know that I get much less than what I pay for. So lazzy I guess you are right. I don't pay my fair share.

-- Posted by fair share on Wed, Nov 4, 2015, at 5:53 PM
  • Lazarus my apologies. I suppose I did consider your remarks made you a proponent of socialism.

    I agree with this statement you made,, completely;

"It would seem that even those people who are most outspoken about welfare that goes to someone else, are quite protective of welfare that accrues to themselves."

That statement applies to both corporate welfare and social welfare. This is the allure of socialism, being able to obtain what others have without the work involved to obtain it.

I also agree that the police should be under the control of the government. I would add to that the military as well. The reason being is that the proper role of government is to prevent "plunder" and cause justice to reign. Both of these entities are in place for that purpose.

Electric production should not, and is not owned by the government. Although some is, such as the TVA, 80% of electricity production in this country is privately owned. As I already mentioned, the DREMC which supplies my power is a co-operative owned by the members. Not that there shouldn't be regulation, there should be, and there is. However, that regulation should only be used for the prevention of plundering the citizens. Utilities that formed monopolies in the past were plundering the people. So regulation was needed, but not government take over.

The government should be confined to its proper role of preventing plunder of life, liberty, and property. Under no circumstance should it be involved in the plundering of the same.

You touched on one such area with garbage pick-up. Those who do not have their garbage picked up should not be FORCED to pay for it. Likewise anything that the government does that plunders the people of their life, liberty, or possessions by use of force is unjust.

Many programs the government has, does just that. One such is Obamacare. People who do need or want certain services from healthcare are being forced to pay for others through this law.

Virtually anything that can be thought of can be done without forcing the plunder of others. That would include things like roads, schools, fire protection, etc.

Of course these things are needed and wanted by most people but, they need not be owned by the government. All that is needed is to look for where the plunder is occurring and put in place regulations to counter the plundering, nothing more.

For example; roads. While it might seem that everyone needs roads, not everyone does. There are those who do not drive or leave their homes. My father is one. Now, you may say that he has things delivered to him through use of the roads. That is true. However, the cost of the things delivered can include the cost of the delivery peoples' use of the roads. The people using the roads pay the costs and pass a portion on to him. the cost for building and maintaining the roads cane be paid for by the people who use them through fuel, license, and the cost of the vehicle itself.

Again, all that needs to be done is to look for where the plunder of life, liberty, and property is occurring and take action against that. Sweeping government take over of most things makes the government master over them.

Government makes a great servant, but a terrible master.

They could just all band together with like minded people and pool their resources like an old hippie commune.

The reality is that it's no different. Sanders has already advocated a 90% top tax rate, so he means to plunder the producers to support the moochers just like every other traditional socialist.

You can kiss the NASCAR, trailer park, confederate flag waving voters that vote Republican goodbye. They will just stay home. Which is probably about half the base.

People keep commenting about Bill Clinton cheating,he is not running for president. There is one running for president who did commit adultery several times on his several wives and his name is Trump.Conservative Christians overlook this.

  • Unfortunately you are probably right that "some whites" would not vote for a black man. However, I have heard several blacks say they would never vote for a woman. So that may be a wash as far as Carson vs Hillary.

I am watching the news (ABC) right now about Carson. He didn't admit to fabricating a story. He said he was told he would receive a "free ride" if he applied, which he took to mean a scholarship offer, and it probably did. Just because he didn't follow through with the application doesn't mean there was no offer.

He also said the media attacks were "lies". Based on the extreme distrust of the media this is likely to play well for him to motivate the silent majority to action. They are going to have to find something much more concrete to overcome there own lack of credibility.

What is interesting is how vehemently the media is going after him. The video posted above about the pyramids looks to be a hidden camera type recording based on the low angle of the camera. That doesn't diminish what he said, but does bring in to question the context of the conversation.

As was posted above "lies", means you know the truth, but choose to lie. No such conclusive evidence has been presented against him, only conjecture.

Hillary, on the other hand has been proven to fit that description repeatedly. But, the media gives her a free pass???

Although I like him, I had not seriously considered voting for Carson because he seems too timid. But, these types of trivial attacks on his character by an obviously biased media, leads me to believe he may be the one.

Some polls already show him beating Hillary if he gets the nomination. Now, that is a serious threat that must be dealt with by the left. That is what we are seeing. He is going to have to be squeaky clean, and possibly produce witnesses to collaborate his stories to survive these attacks.

As I said before, the media is completely in the tank for Hillary which makes it more likely she will win.

I don't think I've ever seen the dems so desperate. They even paid Hispanic kids to go on tv and cuss Trump! -- Posted by lets be real on Sat, Nov 7, 2015, at 9:33 AM
  • I don't think any of us would fare that well if our middle aged recollections of the events of our youth were word-parsed for accuracy. Runners have a saying; "The older I get, the faster I was." I think it is a stretch to apply the word "lie" to the West Point claim. While it might be described as "inaccurate," it is not without a basis, and does not exist as a foundational statement for anything else.

I find Carson to be the most interesting of the plethora of candidates. There is no denying his remarkable achievements in his life. And, I find his low key, soft-spoken demeanor appealing.... That said, his perfectly sane appearance belies some absolutely whacky beliefs. It would seem that he is not, however, completely out of touch with reality. He does recognize that you can play the "liberal media card" as a sort of get out of jail free, to cover any mis-steps along the way.

That said, he is not a serious contender for the nomination. Today's Republican Party is an uneasy coalition of traditional conservatives, religious extremists, conspiracy theorists, and (among others) racists. While the assertion that all Republicans are racists is ridiculous on its face, that faction can not be ignored, and that voting block would almost certainly prevent Carson from getting the nomination.

That said, in reality, neither Carson nor Trump are serious candidates to be nominated. In the excitement of the moment, it seems to have escaped notice that the "flavor of the month," off the wall favorites have been a regular part of the early stages of the Republican nominating process in recent election cycles. In the end, they are left in obscurity. This mathematical anomaly results from several factors. Without a genuinely compelling candidate among the Republicans, there are a large number of candidates in the race. The Republican party is a coalition of convenience, with some factions greatly at odds with others. And those most likely to be strident in their attitudes are the ones most represented early in the process. A Trump, or a Carson seems to be generating a lot of momentum now, against a backdrop of more than a dozen candidates. But, when the race is narrowed to the serious contenders, their small number of supporters (20% or so, at best) will no longer be significant.

Lastly, there is the somewhat comical perception that the sideshow candidates are the target of some mysterious conspiracy to discredit them. The media is nothing, if not opportunistic. The gaffes and antics of the candidates of either party are leapt on by a media seeking anything to pull in viewers/readers during what is an otherwise boring and insignificant stage in the presidential race. Clowns like Trump, or someone who makes the sort of oddball statements that Carson has a penchant for making are going to garner a lot of attention. Even if such a conspiracy existed, they would hardly be wanting to derail candidacies like theirs. Either one would probably lock in a Democratic victory... in much the way that the Palin pitfall prevented us from having a President McCain.

-- Posted by lazarus on Sat, Nov 7, 2015, at 10:05 AM
  • While I agree that there are some whites who will not vote for a black man, there are many blacks who will vote for him because he is. With Democrats enjoying near 90% of the black vote for the last 50 yrs., it is imperative that they maintain that margin in order to stay in power. In order to do this, they are continuously playing into the racial divide to keep a hold on that power. If Carson gets nominated, it will be harder to paint the GOP as racists.

I have long expected that in the end it would be Hillary vs Bush. In which case, there is no real difference, as usual. The plundering will continue unabated under either one. Maybe, we have already reached the tipping point where the one who promises the most money from the public treasury gets the vote??

However, the noose is tightening as long held democratic cities and states begin to disintegrate into financial ruin under the weight of socialist policies propagated by these ideologies. Failure of these ideas is eminent, as always.

Doing things like doubling the national debt by one administration is enough to raise concern among most voters, except for maybe the most sychophantic followers, or those with no regard for the looming debt that someday must be paid.

In light of the condition and utter chaos that is gripping our nation along with runaway debt, conspiracy theories are sometimes the only things that make sense, or at least offers hope. Otherwise, no one is really directing things and we are in a downward spiral lead by people with demonstrably failed ideologies. At least if there is a conspiracy driving all this, then there is the possibility that the conspirators will be brought to justice and the plundering ceased.

While I think it is naive, or willful ignorance, to not recognize a left leaning bias in the media, I agree with Lazarus that the media is seeking to garner more viewers. Lets face it, Hillary is boring, can't be trusted, not very likable, and has nothing new to offer. Having her on TV is likely to hurt her, and their ratings, more than help.

  • Fair share do you really think that blacks voting democratic are playing into the racial divide?Did you really mean to say that conspiracy theories are sometimes the only thing that make sense or offers hope?If so all I can say is WOW.It has been said by some on this blog that blacks voted for Obama only because he was black. Now some are saying Blacks will not vote for Carson because he is black.Blacks can see that Carson is only a puppet for the republican party and their ideas. One of these ideas is closing 8 out of 10 DMV's in ALA in counties with the highest percentage of non-white registered voters since passing the voter ID law in 2014.This will make it harder for poor, rural registered americans who have voted for years to travel long distance to find a DMV.If they think this is the only way they can win it is a shame.Anyone remember the Jim Crow law.To try to take away any Americans right to vote should be a crime but is not treated as such. When I see Carson I think of 999,who was up in the polls 4 years ago.As long as republicans ignore womens rights, refuse to provide affordable insurance for working poor, take food out of kids mouth in headstart, discriminate against immigrants and turn a blind eye to police brutality they will never get the minority vote.Ben Carson stands by all of these policies.

  • LBR your post is so confused and convoluted it almost is unworthy of response. However, since you posed them as questions?? I will attempt to straighten it our for you.

First of all you addressed your comments to Fair Share, then responded to my post.

Second, I know you have racial tendencies as your many racial post testify, so you must pretty much think the entire democrat party is black. But they are not. I DID NOT say that blacks voting democrat are playing into the racial divide. I said "Democrats" ALL RACES,, play into the racial divide in order to maintain the majority of black votes.

Next you question conspiracy theories being the only thing that makes sense and say "WOW". Then, you immediately follow up your post with two conspiracy theories of your own. One being that Carson is a puppet for the republicans and another about the DMV in Alabama. Are you really that blind? Or, does your hatred for the GOP just overwhelm your reasoning abilities?? SMH

LBR?, if all you could say was WOW you sure would appear much less stupid. My advice to you is go find who taught you to read, think, and write and see if they will give you your money back. I do however agree with you that the lefts attempt to take away (or at least diminish) AMERICANS right to vote by letting the ILLEGALS vote should be against the law.

    On a totally different topic:

For some reason I just thought of my favorite quote from John Wayne. "Life is hard. Its even harder when you're stupid."

1- Speaking of police brutality, has anyone heard when the whites have scheduled their protest/riot down in Louisiana?

2- Republicans don't need to do anything about affordable health care.

Didn't you hear b o shoved that down our throats a few yews back? It is so affordable that lots of people are choosing to pay the fine (tax) instead of purchasing an illegally mandated product.

  • Obama care is not affordable in Tenn because of republicans refusal to expand Medicaid.Carson is a puppet and it is a fact that republicans are trying to close 8 out of 10 DMVs in non-white counties in ALA.Show me proof that democrats are taking away americans right to vote. Fair share don't forget that rioting and burning in America started with the white man.No one is stopping people in Louisiana from protesting, that is their right. If they arrested and charged all police officers this quick for killing all unarmed people, there would be no need for protest or riots. But you and I know it ain't so.I am waiting for someone to say what was said in all the other shootings by police,"the father should have obeyed the law and not run".

LBR?, if you ever took a class on reading between the lines or fractional comparison or sarcasm, you really ought to get your money back.

The people are controlling themselves and not rioting and looting because they know it won't help.

B-o-care is affordable--it was created by the AFFORDABLE Care Act. A lot of people get part or most of it paid for by taxpayers. What difference, at this point, does it make whether it comes from state or federal tax money?

When you let people vote that shouldn't (illegal aliens)-- which is the reason the dems don't want voters to have to identify themselves-- that dilutes the value of a legitimate vote and thereby restricts real Americans right to vote.

Do you really think the kid would be dead if his dad had not tried to run? People make it thru this world in better shape when they take personal responsibility. And no, not all cops that kill unarmed people should be arrested. Especially when being charged by someone that tried to take their gun.

  • When your state does not expand Medicaid the state does not pay for most premiums. With out federal dollars people making $7.50 an hour with kids fall below the poverty level still can not afford premiums. In Tenn over 500,000 of the poorest would be covered if Tenn accepted expansion. We are 1 of 23 states that will miss out on 22.5 billion from 2013 -2022.Tenn residents will pay 7.8 billion in federal taxes that will be used to fund Medicaid in other states that are expanding Medicaid. The Tenn legislators don't care as long as the government pays to cover them and their families. Fair share why do you think republicans are afraid of letting all AMERICAN CITIZENS vote.

Lets be real?, republicans are not afraid to let all American citizens vote. Why are democrats afraid to let ONLY American citizens vote?

If a person only makes $7.50/hr and has kids they can't take care of, they get subsidies (more "free" money). I pay for that and it really doesn't matter to me how the government takes my money to do it.

-- Posted by fair share on Mon, Nov 9, 2015, at 5:55 AM
  • Democrats are not the ones changing the laws and gerrymandering to make it harder for americans to vote. I was referring to a married couple each making $7.50 still cant afford insurance.Only the unmarried get subsidies.Expanding Medicaid would help poor married couples also.

???Really??? If I keep explaining it to you and keep thinking maybe you will get it then you don't, I might start to wonder if I'm the stupid one. It is not a hardship to prove you are who you say you are and that you have the right to vote. By diluting my vote with illegals, the dems try to restrict my right to vote. A single making up to about 60k can get some subsidy, married and with kids can get some at even higher income.

  • Carson is gaining in the polls despite of the media attacks.

Right now, I would say Carson is the man!

Fair Share, you are wasting your time trying to explain to LBR.

The Democrats have successfully bought their support with public money. Nothing else matters, no one will convince them otherwise even when the money runs out, it will be someone else's fault. Today, long held Democratic States and cities are being decimated by financial ruin, and still they hold fast to the party and policies that bring that ruin about.

I am not Republican, but I oppose virtually everything the Democrats are doing. When you point out the history of the Democratic party VS the GOP, then you get some idiotic rhetoric about the 2 parties switching sides in the 60's. Total bunk, but it apparently sells well. As most Democrats swallow it hook, line, and sinker, thereby being enslaved to the Democratic party.

If anything, the two parties are working together like a couple of bookies to plunder the people. The more people they get, illegal or not, the more plunder they get.

I am opposed to plundering of life, liberty, and property!! Right now the Democrats are doing most of the plundering.

If healthcare costs too much, then look for the ones doing the plundering. WHY is it so high? Investigate and fix that!! Don't pass insurance laws to plunder everyone else to pay the plunderers!! What is so hard about that?? Oh, that's right, it is because the biggest plunderers are Lawyers, Insurance Companies, Pharmaceuticals, Universities, and Bankers. You know, the ones who are running our government and writing the laws!!

The one who runs with anti-plundering ideas and policies gets my vote. I am not sure who that is yet. Right now it looks like Ben Carson. But, it sure isn't Hillary or Bernie.

  • Carson and Trump keep talking please. The republican party has 2 choices, one who chased his mama with a hammer and one a reality tv clown with multiple ex-wives.They are a gift to democrats.Carson actually went up in the polls after the story about the hammer. What does that say for his supporters and conservative family values.I hope Carson can stay awake during the next debate. All he has to run on is his biography and he doesn't want that questioned,

  • "When you point out the history of the Democratic party VS the GOP, then you get some idiotic rhetoric about the 2 parties switching sides in the 60's."

Are you unaware that this is not something that is just "made up?" The real story is actually fairly interesting, altho the "switched sides" really only applies to the South. George Wallace is a central figure. Believe it or not, the racial firebrand *Democrat* governor of Alabama began his career as a racial moderate, well respected in the black community (he was actually on the board of regents for Tuskegee at one time.) After losing his first governor's race to a firebreathing racist candidate, Wallace famously said "I will never be out-nxxxxered again." And he was not. However, in the political climate of the time, overt racism (with its attendant ugliness) was going out of vogue, and it was Wallace who adopted the "coded" approach to the subject; preaching such things as "States Rights" for segregation. "States Rights" remains a euphemism for supporting various forms of discrimination, without overtly calling it such.

What Wallace discovered was that the appeal of his coded racist message was not just confined to the South, it had a national appeal. He followed that appeal to a couple of significant runs at the Presidency.

This was not lost on the Republicans, who were searching for a way to break the Democrats' stranglehold on the South, which had lasted since the War of Northern Aggression. Thus was born the famous "Southern Strategy" of the Republican Party.

Up until 1962, neither party was really considered as friendly to the black population, nor especially hostile (except in the South.) A poll at that time showed a little over 20% who thought the Democrats represented the best interests of racial equality, a little over 20% favored the Republicans, and more than half felt there was no difference. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by a coalition of moderate Democrats and Republicans.

It was Barry Goldwater who first adopted the coded racial plank in his presidential platform. Another quote; "Only 1 in 9 Americans is black, and we are not going to win the black vote as a bloc. We might as well hunt ducks where the birds are." Unfortunately for Goldwater, the rest of his message (making the rich richer will help the poor) was not well received in the South, where the rich had long gotten richer... at the expense of the poor.

Here in the South, I have watched the Democrats of my youth morph into the Republicans of my dotage. The two partys have absolutely switched places. And this is not conjecture, it does not rely on mere observation, but can be documented.

By the way, I have not bothered to consult sources for what ought to be common knowledge, so some of the quotes might not be word for word correct. The meaning is not altered.

  • I do in fact believe that George Wallace was more of a moderate than many think. I had the opportunity to know him on a personal, non-political, non-public basis.

My college friends could not understand how I could have a Wallace sticker on one side of my bumper and a Kennedy stick on the other.

Up is down, black is white, wrong is right. I was going to ask where are we going? but we are already there. Maybe a better question is where is Marty McFly? Now I understand why it is ok to badmouth Carson and still not be a racist. He must be white!

Just for clarification, when George Wallace said he would not be "out-n-worded", was he saying that as a democrat or as a republican? Sorry for having so much trouble trying to keep up but this is starting to feel like upside-down day or maybe backwards day. Can someone please help and get me out of this rabbit hole?

-- Posted by fair share on Wed, Nov 11, 2015, at 12:08 PM
  • My father was a republican, but it wasn't the party of today. It is not the party of Lincoln anymore. To ask Carson questions about his life is not badmouthing him.He has put his personal life out there. It was only 3 days ago that he said his mother had alzheimers and couldn't answer questions, now he is saying she can vouch for his violent temper as a teenager. He is weak on the economy and foreign affairs. His answer last night to the question about putting troops on the ground in Iraq was complete jibberish, and only him and his campaign know that the Chinese is in Iraq.

-- Posted by lets be real on Wed, Nov 11, 2015, at 12:27 PM
  • fair share; he said that as a democrat. The only one I remember switching partys with the new Southern strategy was Strom Thurmond. Maybe there were others.

For what it is worth, I am not intending to apply any relative moral standard. The business of political parties is winning elections. They do whatever will achieve that goal, or they would not last long.

  • Welcome to..."Republican World".

Where the historical facts about the Dixiecrats, segregation, and the Republican's southern strategy, are too much for their brains to comprehend.

Yet Ben Carson's belief that the Egyptian pyramids were built by the biblical Joseph and used as storage silos for grain, is completely fathomable.
