If you write a blog of your own, do you get "far out" responses?

Note: The nature of the Internet makes it impractical for our staff to review every comment. Please note that those who post comments on this website may do so using a screen name, which may or may not reflect a website user's actual name. Readers should be careful not to assign comments to real people who may have names similar to screen names. Refrain from obscenity in your comments, and to keep discussions civil, don't say anything in a way your grandmother would be ashamed to read.
  • By the way, I have several hundred responses. Just wish 92% of them were not spam, but......

I really have not been promoting it much. Want to get a number of posts up there and get the "feel" for it before I promote.

"Feeling" is not going that well but then again, I have not put a heck of a lot of time into it either.

  • Yes. My last blog on the T-G received a lot of far out responses totally off topic.

I run a personal blog as well. Once in a while I receive a weird blog, but my spam filter gets most of them...a few do slip through.

What kind of Blog is THIS?

In order to stay on the Topic, only people who own Blogs would be allowed to comment!

Blogs are like a crossword puzzle. You take one letter from one word and make another word from that letter then another word from a letter in that word until your have gone bonkers. However, the words have already been chosen for the crossword puzzle. You have to try to chose the only word they have chosen.

With Blogs, one sentence in a paragraph can start a new paragraph or Looong Letter in some cases, LOL. Then someone else takes a sentence from that paragraph and runs with it.

If people don't stay on the topic, maybe the topic isn't that interesting and no one has an opinion about the topic.

The 1st Amendment gives everyone the freedom of the press, so why shouldn't people use the press or internet as it may be, to express their freedom to speak out on things to get other peoples thoughts.

Now with Blogs, people make a comment that someone else doesn't agree with so they try to explain it. It is a waste of time, but interesting just the same. Everyone has a right to their own opinion, so you get a lot of opinions or comments.

Okay, so what I say is so far out there that most people CAN NOT Believe what I am telling them. I know it to be a fact and can prove most of what I say with documented proof, yet people still do not believe. I do not like to prove everything because the comment gets too long to read. I usually have to walk away or the blog gets shut down.

Oh My, I have gone way over my allotted word count and far, far off the topic - or am I?

Now I have to confess, all your talk about Blogs, I do believe, doesn't even include Your t-g blogs. Isn't this FUN?

  • You are right sui, I did not explain well enough. I was not talking about comments that get way off topic here on this blog. I understand that one comment leads to another and so on so I do not get too uptight about that.

BUT since you brought it up twice in to separate blogs, I do shut down blogs when the comments get personal OR when they get so distasteful that I do not feel that family readers (just in case we have readers below 16) should be surprised by them when they read through the blog.

After all, it has my name on it and that matters to me. I've explained this before but will again for those who do not understand that I cannot delete or edit a comment. Nada, zip, I can not do it.

So, when I have a comment meet my threshold of tolerance, my only choice is to take the whole blog post down. I don't like to do that because others have contributed their thoughts and deserve to have them stay, but..... I also don't take it lightly. Over the years, I may have taken 3 or 5 blogs down for that reason, but, I will continue to do so if that is all I can do.

I believe I may have written to the T-G and asked for them to review a comment and it may have been removed, but the memory cells are not confirming that, so I leave it as a possibility.

Now to the type of comment to which I was referring in the original post. The post was about gardening (yes, on another blog) and here is just the first two paragraphs of the comments I get twice a week.

"I've been surfing onlpine more than 4 hours today, yeet I never found any interesting article like yours. It's pretty worth enough for me. What do you think? Is it a real, sincere post?

If not, why are they taking the time to put it out? I realize it is copy & pasted and some of it sounds as if it is a mixture from numerous statements grouped together, but for what reason?

Just curious. Was the 11 pages from sui by any chance?

-- Posted by fair share on Tue, Feb 23, 2016, at 1:52 PM
  • sui writes to me on other subjects so I know this one would not be from the same source, but I also know you were kidding so......

Whoah, Jason! That blog sure DID take a turn. sui! :-)

What if we could come back into our own comments and "adjust" them? I could then write to the comment writer and suggest, ask, PLEAD with them to alter it a little.

Looks like I need to get back into the 'moderator' blogger position to give some of us an outlet. Don't want someone's pressure cooker to blow. :-)

To get back to the question again, is there some sort of benefit to someone to try to get posts like the one above out there? I know that they often put their email and domain name in there and I know what that is about but these long, rambling non-nonsensical ones have me wondering, big time.

  • Then there two posts from the same ISP and an example is (the poster's name) zpmiafnocjq and their comment "8jSs7c"

Yup, that will be sure to get past me.

I was able to understand just about all of it even though this person has some writing problems. I think he was sincere in what he was trying to say. I didn't get any of the other ideas he spoke of giving you, but that's okay. I believe you.

I know that wasn't my comment, I don't write that good.

I did know from your original post what you meant.

I for one appreciate what you do for the commenters of your blogs. It has it's draw-backs, but you do a fantastic job. I can't complain, even thou I do, lol.

Keep up the good work Steve and good luck on your private or other blogs!!

I'm still waiting for RV or lazarus to start their own blogs here. What a blast that would be!

  • Steve,

Is your blog a wordpress blog?

-- Posted by Evil Monkey on Thu, Feb 25, 2016, at 8:15 PM
  • Yessss. So glad to see your name on the response. I thought you might have some thoughts on it.

-- Posted by stevemills on Fri, Feb 26, 2016, at 6:40 AM
  • Use the plugin Akismet. That will reduce the spam comments to almost nil. It will ask you to register to get the activation code, but it works on more than one blog.

After you get it activated the new comments will automatically get thrown into spam.

Here is the description: Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from spam. It keeps your site protected even while you sleep. To get started: 1) Click the "Activate" link to the left of this description, 2) Sign up for an Akismet plan to get an API key, and 3) Go to your Akismet configuration page, and save your API key.

    It's Free.

  • Free sounds good, but reducing spam sounds even better. I get a fresh wave of "comments" with every post.

I never knew what Askimet was but have to wonder why they do not include that in the sign-up? Or maybe they did and I passed it because I did not understand.

Again, many thanks. I will go to the site and sign up.

  • Hmmm, not free. One time asking $36 per year, next time $48. Not sure that I did not hold my mouth wrong,so I will go back and try later.

-- Posted by stevemills on Fri, Feb 26, 2016, at 10:41 AM
  • So.... are the spam comments just to get links in the blog? Some of them are just a few letters and gibberish.

Are they hoping my blog has no screening?

And if that is what it is, why are some of them soooooo long? To get past automatic screening?

-- Posted by stevemills on Fri, Feb 26, 2016, at 10:43 AM
  • slide the 36 dollar to the left
