Anyone know the background on how this "bathroom" thing got started?

  • I have a lot of friends in the LGBTQ community and for many of the trans people in question, they have already transitioned. They may have been born male, but now live as a female, whether or not they have had bottom surgery. The same applies to female to male. They are essentially asking for the laws to protect their right to use the restroom that best suits them, and particularly, their appearance. I've seen many trans people who have carried out amazing transitions and it's impossible to tell they were born of the opposite sex. For some others, it's a little more obvious.

The issue is one of safety and respect. Trans men do not want to be forced into the women's restroom just because they were born female. If they are mid or post transition, they may fully appear as male, and to force them into a female restroom would be uncomfortable for the women in that same restroom. They want to be protected by law if they go into the male restroom instead.

If a mid or post transition trans female were to go into the men's restroom because she was born male, the issue is reversed. It is now that woman who is at risk of harassment or worse, simply because she is a female in a space reserved for males. Most of the time, trans men and women or anyone who is non-binary (not clearly and strictly male or female) can use the restroom without anyone doing anything more than giving them a sideways glance, but attacks are not unheard of and often lead to serious injuries, and sometimes death, especially in the LGBTQ community. People can sometimes be the most brutal when it's something they don't understand.

What is being requested is simple - no one wants to be harassed, arrested, removed from a store, etc, if they go into the restroom in which they feel the most comfortable and that corresponds to their current gender. It shouldn't matter what gender they were assigned at birth, and that is all they are asking - for it to not matter.

  • Thanks for the very informative explanation Leah.

Steve, I think you are mistaken when you're saying that it's transgender folks asking for the rights. It's Conservatives that are putting forth the bill and asking for the rights to force transgender folks into which bathroom, by law, to use.

Some transgender have gone thru the full change and that would make things extremely awkward for everyone.

Have you ever seen Chaz Bono, who before was Chastity Bono. He was born Cher's daughter, but is now changed to a man. He even has a full beard. To look at him you'd never know that he was born female. But could you imagine forcing him now to use the women's restroom? Women would be screaming and running from the restroom.

  • But if they look like a male or female, who asks? How would the police know or be concerned?

I don't know what happens in women's facilities, but I have never seen a man expose himself. If they had to change clothes, it was done in a stall so ......

Is this law saying that if you ARE "found-out", that the law will not protect you? That people have a right to beat the heck out of you?

-- Posted by stevemills on Tue, Apr 12, 2016, at 1:17 PM
  • RV, that does put a different motivation to it. Is it claimed to be a safety factor to keep guys out of girls bathrooms who only "claim" to be transgender?

How do police do their jobs these days?

I don't see any problem with what restroom to use. There are stalls in both if I am right, I never go into a woman's bathroom.

If they use a stall what is the problem?

How did they manage to but a baby changing table in some men's bathrooms? And what bathroom would a man take his little girl or woman take her son?

Things have a way of working out, yet there are some who must make a big deal out of everything.

Kind of reminds you of Socialism doesn't It? Being told what to do, when you can go and which Bathroom to use!

Hillary will get it all straightened out when she gets in office! Trump blew his chance of being nominated because he didn't campaign to the "Delegates". He let Cruz get them.

I just left Yahoo mail where there was a video of movie stars who were transgender.

I couldn't watch it because my Flash player needed to be up-dated. My computer always crashes when I update. Besides, I don't really want to know. What good would it do me to know THAT information?

    I will also add this:

I was changing channels on my TV last month trying to find a movie (not many on TV anymore) and I came across a Transgender show. A very Tall man changed into a woman. She had a group of friend that follow her everywhere from what I deduced.

When I came on that show, what to my surprise was this Trany mentioning Hillary's name. I had to stay there and see if it was really Hillary Clinton she was talking about.

Sure enough! Hillary was there campaigning and when Hillary saw this Transgender, Hillary came over with a big smile on her face and greeted her with open arms. Hillary knew exactly who this person was and looked to be very friendly towards her. And the craziest thing was, Hillary never asked her to vote for her!

What can I say, except I left that show and never gone back to it.

I'm sorry, what does that have to do with bathrooms?

-- Posted by sui on Tue, Apr 12, 2016, at 1:36 PM
  • Rocket, you're right. It is coming from that direction, but there concerns within the community itself are substantial.

Steve, no one should ask, but all it takes is for one person to notice that girl in the bathroom has an extra appendage and then you have some poor person potentially facing charges, simply because they had to do what is natural to all of us and went into the bathroom that best suited their gender.

As for the people who "claim" to be transgender to gain access to a bathroom for the opposite sex, there is a larger issue at play and those people are not going to worry about what the law says.

We have all been in a bathroom with a transgender person, whether we knew it or not.

  • I just read some of the comments on another story regarding this issue that was posted by one of the Nashville TV stations. Some of the comments quite literally hurt my soul. I'm so glad we can be more civilized here and have a discussion, rather than resorting to threats of violence and spewing hatred.

  • After all my years of not being able to use public restrooms, it is finally working in my favor. If I were to go into a ladies restroom and seen what appeared to be a man i would turn around and leave. If i could not tell if it was a man or woman i would just (bless her Heart) and leave. if it she looked like a woman at first glance then no problem. The only question I have is who would want the job to verify which bathroom people get to use.

If everyone used the bathroom that best suited their gender then there would be no problem. Not counting the very rare true hermaphrodite, there are guys and there are girls. Doesn't matter how bad someone wants to be or thinks they are the other, they are not. No amount of surgery or hormones can change your DNA. But since some guys want to dress up like a girl and go to the girls bathroom (and vice versa) the guvment sees fit to make laws telling guys to use the guys bathroom and girls to use the girls bathroom. If everyone would use just 1/2 the common sense God gave us we would have a whole lot less problems in this world.

  • Most of our readers know what I will do to a violent or hatred filled post. If I can't get to he T-G fast enough to pull the post, I will take the whole thing down.

I knew that possibility existed when I posted but.....

Maybe the ability to "not" prosecute the law based on certain standards is where we should go, not make another law about using the bathroom.

  • How about more unisex and family bathrooms where only one can enter at a time and lock the door. This would benefit single father's with daughters, single mothers with small sons or if you have to assist a disable adult parent of the opposite sex. I am sure all of us have used a bathroom while a transgender was in the next stall and never knew. Who is going to carry around a birth certificate all the time? And how are you going to decide by looking at someone you think maybe transgender really is? Will we have bathroom police that will order people they think look suspicious pull down their pants?

I think Tenn representative Durham sponsored the bill in Tenn. The one banned from the house of Representatives for sexual harassment of 32 women and we are more worried about who uses what bathroom.

-- Posted by lets be real on Tue, Apr 12, 2016, at 6:00 PM
  • The Mayo clinic lists schizophrenia as a severe brain disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior.

If you look in your pants and think you're the opposite sex, you are a textbook example of schizophrenic, unless you were born hermaphroditic.

Pretending people with mental illness are normal and humoring their delusions does them no favors.

I'm sure we could go to Moccasin Bend and find a man who thinks he's the Queen of England. We could perform radical surgery on him to help make him look the part and no doubt he'd feel better, but he still wouldn't be Elizabeth.

Instead of providing special bathroom access, we should provide them with the address of a mental health professional.

  • Well Tennessee is trying to pass a law for therapists to be able to discriminate against seeing gay and transgender people.Who is going to be next? We are opening up a can of worms.

-- Posted by lets be real on Wed, Apr 13, 2016, at 10:40 AM
  • I am not aware of police being called into bathrooms because a transgender used the wrong bathroom,so why the law.More GOP politicians have been arrested for lewd acts in public bathrooms than anyone identified as transgender. If Tenn lose 1.5B in revenue it means more money available to go to other states where religious freedom is not under threat from self imposed delusions.

Steve, I may be being paranoid , but I get the feeling your last post was directed at me. No where in it do I condone violence. Nor do I fill it with hatred. To the contrary, I feel sorry for those that truly can not deal with reality. On the other hand, I don't appreciate them causing such a stir in the PC community that it impacts my life. I don't know about the others but I don't know what you do with hatred filled posts since a lot of LBR?s posts (and lazyrus' and uncle phil's/arvy's) are full of hatred.

Mike, no doubt a lot of the transgender people truly are schiz. But some do not really meet the definition other than their "body image". Either way, they are "crazy".

lest i be real, what about Anthony Wiener? Good thing he isn't running for president. Just think if he got Holder for his VP running-mate. I can see the signs now!

  • Fair Share, that wasn't aimed at anyone in this discussion. I was just assuring folks that before I let this get out of hand, I would shut it down.

I have no way to remove a comment, but the T-G does. If they agree that the comment should be removed, the conversation continues, but if they don't and I still do, or I cannot get to them quickly, my only recourse is to delete the topic entirely.

OK Steve, I believe you. LBR?, I really have no idea what a quilty dog is. I assume it is a dog quilted out of sheep or goat hair? Or maybe just comments from a goat f**** I mean a person that can just barely get along in this brave new world.

-- Posted by fair share on Wed, Apr 13, 2016, at 3:16 PM
  • Hmmm, I've never heard that. We have one dog who seems to take the blame no matter who does what. Maybe that is because her name developed from her actions and she became PITA.

I commend you on making a return statement but keeping it civil. Thanks.

Steve, I sure hope dogs don't get a bad name because of PETA. Personally, I am much more a cat person. But I believe all animals (including humans) should be able to take care of themselves or at least allowed to if they can.

  • I'm very confused on this issue but having known and met transgender people.I have compassion, respect and support for the issues they face.It has to be hard to be in their shoes and to think others want to kill them, assault them and persecute them. I think of a story a gentleman told me about a woman that worked for him.She was being harassed for being a lesbian and being constantly questioned about it.One day she broke down and told them. When she turned 13 her father raped her,he then held her down for her brother to rape her. This went on for 4 years. She never trusted another man. They have enough troubles and problems without causing them more.At my place we have unisex bathrooms in order to accommodate all.

Since I am the T-G megalomania,

A lot of Transgenders are real people with real feelings and minds.

Many believe they are truely meant to be the opposite sex and under go operations.

If a man has very, very strong feelings for the same sex, just maybe he wasn't meant to be gay but a woman instead. The same is true with a woman feeling attracted to other women.

These feeling are not just feelings of desires but very STRONG Emotions that go deeper than most people can comprehend.

Some of these feeling may be over-powering desires, but when they go deep they are planted in the mind and in the heart. Transgender is the changing over. If they never finish changing over, Then you may ask yourself why?

In my Opinion, the perverts are usually the people who want to make the Laws and the big deal out of something that doesn't even concern them.

Their life isn't what they want out of life so they change to match their inner beings. Ever got in touch with your inner being?

These are strong and controlling and like I always say, when you know, that you know, that you know, well you're on your way.

However, that is just the beginning, because when someone finds out and spreads the word, sometimes it can cause much damage for the rest of their lives.

So to come back to the tranny bathroom... if they made a special bathroom just for Transvestites, would they be happy with their own bathroom since they would all be the opposite sex of each other, male and female?

Yes they would be happy, because they are all going through the same feelings and mind set. They would confide in each other and would probable compare thoughts from stall to stall. they would be able to talk about the exhausting operations and drugs to become what they are today!

People have to learn that we have too many laws now! The law is for the lawless, not the people who obey the law.

-- Posted by sui on Wed, Apr 13, 2016, at 9:10 PM
  • Going back to Steve's original question; I was also perplexed about where such a law came from. My experience with public bathrooms (speaking only of the mens' rooms)has been that people do not look at one another. Never. I asked, and it would seem that all womens' rooms have stalls, and I cannot imagine that they expose themselves in view of one another. If I did see someone staring at me, it would not matter if it was a man, a woman, or a transgender; I would get out of there as fast as I could go.

It seems that the No Car legislature was just responding to a law passed by Charlotte banning such discrimination, and apparently the No Car legislature felt compelled to defend the principle of local control by denying the right to local control. The existence of any actual bathroom issue remains to be demonstrated.

  • Im not sure why it got to be such a hot topic now other than to be a political distraction during elections time. We've had transgenders for much longer than separate restrooms. Until now there has been little issue with it. Can anyone here provide even one instance where anyone was harmed by a transgender in a restroom? It's the heterosexual perverts that are the problem, and for the most part we can safely say they will be males. What is happening is a peaceful group of people are being vilified because of the evil caused by straight men who feel they have the right to sexually abuse others. Yet nobody has the back bone to call it what it is and would rather blame it on a gays because they are different than them. Truth be told it's not the gays they fear it's the male perverts who may take advantage and disguise themselves as gay to gain access to the women's room. Gays are not the cause of those crimes, if anything I would say porn would be a stronger problem leading to that. Yet it is easier to blame gays than give up their porn.

Sexual sin is sexual sin, weather it be, unmarried sex, multiple partners, porn, incest, the bible even list lust under that sin.... yet we hear all the anger going towards the nonviolent mostly peaceful group of gays, - the people screaming the loudest don't want to be held accountable for their sexual sins. I wonder why they only choose one to attack gays sins and not the sexual sin they have engaged in? They don't yell against porn, against lust, against sleeping around when it's them doing it. It's safe to guess they watch the TV shows that have strong sexual lusty content. We see and hear people spewing hate towards the gays but then going home to their porn, are out sleeping with (or trying to) different partners. The hypocrisy is so blatant it makes a head spin.

I think that this whole issue came out because of politics and the need to create a new fear to divide the people. I believe that when they can not get votes with good honest issues and policies they revert to hate and fear....

Next time someone tells you they fear for their safety because a transgender is in their restroom, ask them two questions, how do they know the person was gay, and ask them to give you some examples of transgendered people who attacked straights in restrooms....

here is an example of what this is leading to....http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/north-carolina-woman-kicked-out-of-ladies-bathroom-by-police-after-being-mistaken-for-transgender/
