  • Of course it is being phased out. Most of it is paid by the wealthy... altho there are regular people who will get some small benefit.

They have to phase it out, rather than eliminate it all at once, because a portion goes to local government. In Shelbyville, and most cities, the share of Hall Income Tax is a negligible amount, but for the affluent cities, the loss will be a serious blow. Last I heard, Brentwood did not need a property tax, because they could run the city entirely on the city share of the Hall Income Tax.

  • Glad it's being repealed as it's just more redistribution.

Krogers doesn't have different prices for groceries based on your income, so why should government have a sliding scale?

  • Wow! Run a whole town on that type of tax? Doesn't sound fair, unless you are living there tax free I suppose.

Not only not sounding fair, Steve, it also sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? And you know what they say about too good to be true. Running a whole city on a tax mainly on those evil rich people!

Lazyrus, it looks like you are viewing this thru your left leaning glasses. The small benefit some regular people will get is small in absolute number but bigger in impact. These are primarily retired folks whose main (or only) supplement to SS is their interest and dividends. By the way, I'm glad you still have your honorarium topic up at Carl's place.

Quietmike, the only reason the government should have a sliding scale is so they can manipulate it in order to screw us over as much as possible. When they don't want to do something on a sliding scale they just give us all a participation trophy.

  • "Tennessee's sales tax holiday will now be one weekend earlier than it has been in the past, due to a 2016 law change

Starting this year and continuing annually, the sales tax holiday will be held during the last weekend in July, instead of the first weekend in August each year.

This year's sales tax holiday will be July 29 through July 31." from TN Dpt Revenue newsletter

I have never heard anything about a Hall income tax, but I am sure it is unconstitutional.

There are only two types of taxes allowed by the U.S. Constitution. A Direct Tax and an Indirect Tax or Excise Tax. A direct tax is unconstitutional unless it is a tax on the USE of Property you own. If You earn money from the use of your property, that would be taxable, but the ownership of property is NOT Taxable (legally, that is)or so, the U.S. Constitution says.

An excise Tax is a tax in exchange for a benefit or privilege and MUST be UNIFORM Thought the states. If one state has a Hall income tax but not all the states, where is the Uniformity? What is the Benefit or Privilege you receive from paying this tax?

Income Tax is an Excise Tax that gives you the benefit or Privilege of doing Business as an artificial entity. It has nothing to do with anyone who doesn't have a licensed business. This Tax also must be UNIFORM through out the states. This is not a uniform tax when the poor pay very little if anything and the rich pay more and the middle class pays the highest amount of tax.

Corporations are suppose to pay the income Tax, not the people. Instead the states give the corporation tax breaks or no taxes at all if they come to their states to provide jobs.

Do you see how they are raping you? Where is your Benefit or privilege for working at your job making a pay check that pays you exactly what you earn by your time put in? You are compensated for your time and energy - equal pay for equal work, no profit or income.

Sales Tax is an Excise Tax also. It must provide a benefit or a privilege and be Uniform though out the states. The Sales Tax is different in each county of the state, VOIDING out the Uniformity.

Also certain things manufactured in the state can not be taxed. They are not allowed to tax one item for someone or company and not the others nor decrease the tax of one item for someone or company without doing the same for everyone. They ignore the law.
