  • Has Winter returned? Kinda, sorta?

I don't see any temps that should adversely affect those veggies I've already planted, but it close and the weather forecasters aren't always spot on so we better keep an eye out.

  • A note for us inside gardeners, check your plants for aphids, mealybugs, etc.

I moved a miniature rose out to the greenhouse to get some extra light, then moved it back in to enjoy. Somewhere in between they picked up aphids and I did not catch it until the plant was in obvious distress.

The first reaction was get out the insecticidal soap and soak that baby but as I was heading the the emergency room my eyes fell on one of our ladybugs and BINGO, my actions changed.

I placed it in the greenhouse away from other plants and gathered about 10 ladybugs who were muttering around the house, complaining for little to eat. All but one stayed on the plant.

This morning the aphids are just about gone and about 5 ladybugs remain to clean up. Hopefully it was in time. This poor rose has been through a lot over the years, so I suspect it will rebound.

  • Well, I resisted, so if anyone went and wants to share their experience, please feel free.

From the Facebook page it looks like it was a pretty good turnout with some great food. I was especially pleased to see a number of male faces in the crowd.

Not that I mind being in a room of women, but it helps me feel less "strange" when I see other guys like to garden as much as I do.
