Bedford County Longbeards chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation held its annual JAKES Day event on Aug. 17 at Arrowhead Ranch near Normandy. JAKES, which stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship, is an NWTF program dedicated to informing, educating and involving youth in wildlife conservation and wise stewardship of natural resources. The JAKES Day event, which was free to participants, includes skeet and BB gun shooting, archery, pony rides, a rock climbing wall (sponsored by the Tennessee National Guard), an inflatable (sponsored by Cooper Steel), kayaking (sponsored by Normandy Kayak Rentals and Wartrace Float-A-Boat Rental), swift water rescue (sponsored by the Shelbyville & Bedford County Special Response Team), a turkey-calling contest (sponsored by Joel Weaver), food, and prize drawings.
