If you’re looking for the right gift that has a bit of — let’s say — pizazz to it, then Random Goods General Store on Union Street has you covered.
They have just about everything from handmade leather bags and lamps to hardware and knickknacks.
The store is co-owned by Tim Falcone and husband and wife team Greg and Gabe Bulger. Coming from the windy city of Chicago, Tim and Greg were looking for a way to use their skills as construction workers while finding a more creative outlet.
“Chicago was crazy,” said Greg. Finding better, warmer weather and friendly faces in Bedford County, they knew staying here was the right choice. “This is peace. This is like home.”
So, they hope to bring a little something extra to the community when it comes to a fun place to find gifts or local crafts.
They based the store off of their eBay store and input from a community garage sale they had not too long ago. “We had one garage sale that just went off like crazy so we were like we have to get a space,” said Greg.
What’s not made by their three sets of hands is bought from wholesale or auction.
Knives, BB guns, makeup, headphones, dolls—you name it, they probably have it. “We kind of want it to be an experience where you can come and talk, but also there’s something for everybody to look at,” said Greg.
“I think we’re trying to give a small-town department store-type experience with some higher-end items too,” said Tim.
But be wary…items come in and out fast. “Our stock is constantly changing because we buy a lot of stuff at auction. Last night, we tried to get Orbeez guns and we ended up with costumes,” said Greg with a laugh.
But Greg, Gabe, and Tim know it’s their teamwork and dynamic that make them unique. “Everything we do we practically do ourselves,” said Tim.
And since they’re doing everything from the ground up, they’ve had a few learning curves along the way. But they say they’re looking forward to bringing the community another place to make Shelbyville unique.
“We want a community here. We want all the people of Shelbyville and all the people in the surrounding areas to enjoy a small-town shopping experience,” said Tim. “That’s what we like.”
They also accept local wall art. For more information, see their Facebook, Random Goods General Store, or stop by their store at 876 Union Street. They are open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
