Bet Against Cancer Night is Nov. 19

Cancer was the second leading cause of death, after heart disease, in the United States in 2019. Locally, many are beating the odds against the ‘C’ word.

Bedford County Cancer Foundation is working to help all they can deal with the dreaded disease. Their logo is “Neighbors helping neighbors.” So, get ready to roll ‘em, hold ‘em and cash them in for a worthy cause.

The 2021 Bet Against Cancer Night is planned for Friday, Nov . 19, at Blue Ribbon Circle. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. and should end around 11 p.m. Shelby Sudduth Taylor said the foundation on which she serves is currently selling table sponsors, general sponsors, and event tickets.

“For those interested in sponsoring our event they are welcome to reach out to me directly or another board member.”

For those interested in purchasing a $50 ticket for the event, they’re also available at First Community Bank.

“We will have craps, poker, blackjack, and more!”

Heavy snacks will be provided by Bell Buckle Cafe. Bedford County Cancer Foundation is a tax-exempt charitable organization that provides financial support for cancer victims and their families in Bedford County.

Shelby’s immediate family has been the victim of cancer—twice over—so she knows how important it is for the community to unite for such causes as the Bet Against Cancer Night.

“We raised over $20,000 at our 2019 Bet Against Cancer Event, and we look to raise even more at our 2021 event.” (Last year’s event did not happen due to COVID-19.)

“We’re here to help you face the challenges that come with cancer,” said Taylor.

The foundation, she said, is dedicated to assisting cancer patients while they’re undergoing treatment for the disease. She explained that qualification for financial assistance is based on a per-need basis.

Assistance may be a monetary gift to help with day-to-day expenses of those treatments. All applications submitted are reviewed by the foundation’s board of directors.
