Comic Art Attack, Shelbyville’s first-ever fantasy and comic art convention, will be held 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Nov. 2 at The Fly Arts Center on South Main Street. The event will include vendors, special activities, special guests, and a free comic book for the first 50 guests with paid admission (limit two comic books per household).

Special guests will include Marc Ballard of Comic City Conventions and Monster Magazine; pencil artist Ricky Blalock; children’s author and former T-G staff writer Jason M. Reynolds; and comic book artist Vance Capley. There will be live music as well.

***Hands-on action

Activities and attractions will include a wand-making station, free balloon animals, free face-painting, game booths and a superhero coloring station. There will be special props and backdrops available for photos. All activities are free with paid admission.

A costume contest open will be held, divided up into two age groups (ages 6-12 and 13-up). In each age division, there will be an award for most original costume and one for most authentic costume. Costume contest judging will begin at 12:30 p.m. for kids and 1 p.m. for ages 13 and up, Each category and age division will be awarded trophies/ribbons and prize baskets for first, second and third place. Costumes are encouraged, whether you’re entering the contest or not, but not required.

There will be a drawing contest for the best original comic character (not an existing character). The drawing contest will have age divisions for 6-12, 13-17 and 18 and up. Drawings must be submitted for judging by 4 p.m. on Nov. 1. They must be at least 8” by 10” in size and matted, but may be in either portrait or landscape format. The actual drawing size, before matting, must not exceed 11” by 14”. Comic characters can be any genre, gender or age, but must not depict nudity or excessive graphic violence.

Admission to the event is $10 for those 13 and over; $5 for ages 6-12; and free for those 5 and under.
