COALMONT — After building just a four-point lead after the first quarter of play on Friday night at Grundy County (7-10, 0-2), the Community Viqueens (16-5) went on an absolute tear in the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach in a 65-35 blowout win against the Lady Yellow Jackets.
It was a bit of a slow start for the Viqueens on the offensive end of the court, but Zoey Dixon tallied seven first-quarter points to lead Community in the period.
Defensively, it was a lockdown effort throughout the game that kept Grundy County in check.
With the slim lead in hand, M.J. Simmons took control of the game in the second period and as part of a 27-point effort by the Purple and Gold, absolutely dominated in the paint.
Simmons scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter, and was an extremely efficient 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
Dixon also continued to pour on the offense in the second and added eight more to the cause.
By halftime, the Viqueens stretched their lead to 26 points—and things only continued to spiral in Community’s favor in the second half.
Dixon and Simmons led the charge in a 21-point third period, with Simmons adding eight more points.
The game slowed considerably from an offensive standpoint in the fourth quarter, as Community tacked on just eight more points, but still had the lead and game well in hand.
Simmons and Dixon combined for 42 points to lead the way.
Grundy County saw nine players pencil their name in the scoring column, but no Lady Yellow Jacket reached double figures against Community on Friday night.
The Viqueens will be back on the road on Tuesday night, traveling to Cannon County, before returning home on Friday to host county rival Cascade in a District 7-AA clash.
