Shelbyville/Bedford County Chamber of Commerce was recently notified that it is the recipient of a $25,000 contribution - one geared toward encouraging new business development in the community.

Electric cooperative Duck River Electric Membership Corporation (DREMC) and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) officials recently made that official check presentation. DREMC will contribute $12,500 and the remaining matching donation will be made by TVA.

Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Allen Pitner said Tuesday, "We are very grateful for the investment that Duck River Electric Corporation has made in the Shelbyville-Bedford County Chamber of Commerce. Our five-year plan of work was established to improve our local workforce, support and promote local businesses, encourage entrepreneurship, promote tourism and support the city's and county's efforts to recruit industry. All of these endeavors are geared toward improving the overall economic health for Shelbyville and Bedford County and our quality of life. Duck River Electric Corporation's investment in this plan will ensure that we will be able to execute the plan to its fullest over the next 5 years."

Several chambers of commerce in the DREMC service area have also been granted such funding, with each being presented a portion of the total donated funds to support economic revitalization and job growth in their respective communities. Those chambers receiving funding include the Maury County Alliance, Franklin County, Manchester and Marshall County.

"DREMC is proud to support these chambers and the work they are doing to stimulate the economy during these challenging times," said DREMC President and CEO Scott Spence. "We want to encourage new business development and a healthy economy for the members we serve. This is one way by which DREMC can contribute to these efforts."

This is the second COVID-19 relief contribution made by DREMC, company officials recently said. Last June, the local electric provider made a $60,000 donation to the residential electric bill assistance program, Project HELP, which DREMC stated has supported hundreds of families facing financial instability.
