Eagles win 1, drop 2 in tourney

JASPER — Shelbyville Central had a mixed bag of results during the Mountain Valley Classic over the weekend.
The Eagles dropped a heartbreaker, 9-8 final score to Lenoir City, but slugged their way past Sequatchie County before falling to Marshall County.

Lenoir City 9, SCHS 8
Shelbyville Central orchestrated a monster second inning, but just couldn’t get over the hump in a 9-8 loss to Lenoir City.
The Eagles knocked around the Panthers pitching staff to the tune of seven runs in the top of the second inning.
Lenoir City answered and plated six in the bottom of the frame before pushing the tying run across the plate in the bottom of the third inning.
The Panthers played add on and took a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Shelbyville answered with a tying run in the top of the seventh, only to surrender the game-winner to the Panthers in the bottom of the frame.
Caden Thomas was the top offensive producer for Shelbyville, going 3-for-4 with a double, while Marquis Williams connected for three base hits.
Mason Shavers, Arye Kavanaugh, Carston Williams, Caleb Molder, William Bobo and Nick Hopper all singled as well.
Thomas pitched 1 2/3 innings and was tagged for six runs on seven hits.
Nick Hopper and Carston Williams also pitched in relief for Shelbyville as well.

SCHS 10, Sequatchie 8
After belting our 14 hits against Lenoir City, the Eagles were the beneficiary of a big win, downing Sequatchie County, 10-8.
Shelbyville had to fight for its win over the Indians as Sequatchie plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Shelbyville didn’t get on the board until the top of the third inning when the Eagles plated two.
Sequatchie answered with one in the bottom of the inning, only to surrender four to Shelbyville in the top of the fourth.
Both teams scored four in the seventh inning, but was Shelbyville Central who was able to preserve the two-run lead and hold on for the win.
The Eagles only managed six hits against the Indians, but half went for extra bases.
Arye Kavanaugh, Caden Thomas and Nick Hopper all connected on doubles, with Marquis Wilson driving in a pair of runs.
Palmer Edwards went 6 1/3 innings for the Eagles before Jarius Brown pitched the final 2/3 inning in relief.

MCHS 11, SCHS 0

Not much went the Eagles’ way in an 11-0 loss to Marshall County. The Tigers belted out 12 hits and closed the game with a five-run seventh inning against Shelbyville.
Caleb Molder went 2-for-3, while Carston Williams also singled.
Marshall County’s Trey Warner did the bulk of the damage for the Tigers with a 3-for-4 night, including two home runs and two RBIs.
