MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. - Fouls called early in the first and second quarter hindered the Community Vikings’ plan of attack on the road against Mt. Pleasant Tigers on Friday night in a 19-point loss, 65-46. Austin Stickler, Jaxson Williams and Charlie Haskins all picked up two fouls apiece by the end of the first half and were playing cautious defensively against the Tigers for the rest of the game.
Haskins started out strong, bagging eight points in the first quarter while Stickler added five more for the Vikings. Unfortunately for the Vikings, Stickler committed his first two fouls within the first four minutes and was relegated to the bench. Tiger Jakyri McClure hit four baskets and a free throw to pull Mt. Pleasant ahead of Community by the end of the first quarter and that lead continued throughout the game. By the end of the first term the Tigers were ahead 21-13.
Williams and Haskins hustled on defense for Community, but were plagued with two fouls each after being a touch too physical. During the second quarter, Williams dropped in four points for the Vikings. Stickler and Karson Boyce each added a bucket for the only points Community collected during that period. McClure upped his scoring output with six more for Mt. Pleasant. By halftime, the Vikes were down by 22 points, 43-21.
Community tried to rally after halftime by putting in 14 points in the third quarter, but it was not enough to pull ahead of Mt. Pleasant. Haskins, Stickler, Landon Lovvorn and Moe Berman each connected on a field goal while Williams connected on four of six free throws to go with a two-point field goal for all of the Viking’s tallies. Community held the Tigers’ scoring to only 11 points in the period, but Mt. Pleasant still led by 19 points, 54-35.
Haskin’s lay-up at the beginning of the fourth accounted for the last two of his 12 total points in the game while Williams dropped in one more foul shot to end with 11 for the Vikings. Stickler tallied seven points for Community. McClure ended his night with a game-high 27 points for the Tigers. Mt. Pleasant pulled away in the end to win, 65-46.
The Community Vikings are set to open district play on Tuesday, January 7th against Grundy County at home.
