Debbie Adams writes health memoirs

Debbie Adams said recently that her greatest childhood memories is that of her endless adventures to the public library with her father.

She is certain perusing those dusty books years ago led her to write her first health book, which she will have available 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday at New Covenant Christian Bookstore.

A resident of Murfreesboro, Adams will be signing copies of “Unlocking The Code To Bliss: A Southern Belle’s Secret.”

While the printing of the paperback was taken care of by Amazon, Adams added that the formatting and the cover art—a pink butterfly—was done by professional designer Gabriela Pears.

“I love pink,” the new author said, pointing to the book cover. How it started Adams, who works professionally in accounts receivable for an area company, first attended a book writing retreat last spring. In June, she began writing her book.

“It took me about 2 months to write it . . . self published on Amazon on Aug. 17.”

So the book copies are fresh off the press. Adams dedicates it to God for His wisdom and to her husband, Bud, who gave her the title idea.

As for the “Southern Belle” aspect, Adams said being a middle Tennessean, she only felt it proper.

A part of her book states: “We’ve been talking about southern food . . . . Now let’s talk about Southern Belles and how they act. They have a certain attitude, appearance and manners. They will fake a smile without appearing fake. Southern gals have warmth and hospitality . . . . Southern women are a class of their own. They’re as sweet as their sweet tea until you refuse to have seconds of their meal.”

Last year, following the pandemic, Adams, though not grossly overweight, decided she just wanted to improve her health.

“I read my Bible on a daily basis. God in His Word tells us that He created us. We have a body, a soul and a spirit. That’s what I talk about in the book. We have to get all three of those in line to keep our bodies in line.”

Now she’s convinced that processed sugar and junk food are poison, draining a body of energy.

“You get to a point in your life where you say, ‘something’s got to change.’”

She was following a woman on Facebook who had a book club. She said that was the beginning of her wanting to write a book about health.

“There are so many books out there about diets . . . all short term. I wanted something that was more like a life change. It’s part spiritual and part health. I’m trying to get people to understand that we have to look at our bodies, how God created them . . . watch what we’re putting in them or even on them.”

Adams began an intermittent fasting journey not long ago. She recommends the proper way to do fasting in the book.

“Years ago, people would bring up fasting . . . I would be starving. I love to eat, as I’m sure we all do. When I started my book, I knew what I wanted to write about . . . the Bible verses I wanted to put in there. But as far as the dynamics of the health, I had to do some research.”

She added, “We need to get our bodies renewed ever so often. That’s why in the book I suggest doing intermittent fasting.”

She also writes about maintaining a “clean gut.” Through her research she’s learned about what leads to toxic guts—those which cannot properly process and digest food.

She’s also very adamant about keeping one’s body hydrated, which goes a long way in a clean gut, according to Adams.

Other portions of the 105 page book include topics ranging from clean vegetables to the hygienic results of oil pulling with coconut oil.
