BELL BUCKLE — In their last two times on the floor, the Webb Feet suffered double-digit losses, but they completely flipped the script against the Grace Christian Lions on Tuesday night as they lit it up from three-point land to cruise to a 69-49 victory.
After competing in the Thanksgiving Classic at Centennial, head coach Micah Williams was happy to be back in Bell Buckle to work with his team on their faults.
“We were able to come in the last couple of days and work on some things that needed to be fixed,” he said. “I think our guys came in upset about how the Classic ended, but eager to work and get better as well. They executed the game plan very well tonight and we were able to get a lot of guys in the game, so I’m extremely proud of them.”
After the Lions struck first with a Trace Phillips three-pointer just a minute into the contest, the Feet went on a 7-0 run to force a timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, the Lions were able to make it a two-point game before the first quarter ended.
To open the second quarter, Webb junior Taveon Comage got loose on a fast break and slammed down a one-handed jam which jolted a 10-2 run for his squad.
The Feet were dialed in for the entire quarter as they knocked down six shots from beyond the arc with four of those coming from Justin Burrows, who scored all 12 of his points in the frame.
Webb totaled 11 makes from the perimeter against the Lions.
“It’s not necessarily just about shooting threes for us, but working the ball to get open shots,” Williams said. “The guys moved the ball inside and out well tonight, which opened up some kick out threes. Those are the type of shots we really want, not forced threes.”
Senior Stephen Olowoniyi led the way in the first half for the Feet with 13 points, and helped his team to a 39-24 advantage at the break.
Grace Christian opened the second half on a run of their own by knocking down two shots from three-point land to close the Feet’s lead to single digits.
But Olowoniyi and Webb found their footing again after he slammed down back-to-back dunks to jolt their offense back to a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter.
They never looked back from there as they took a 57-41 advantage into the final frame.
Williams was able to get his bench players some floor action after they extended their lead to over 20 points early into the final eight minutes.
The reserves accounted for 10 of Webb’s 12 points in the quarter.
“Especially at this point of the year, we want to try to develop some of these younger guys while we can,” Williams said. “Opposing teams start to figure you out more and more as the season goes on, so it’s important to get some of these guys some time on the floor so they’re comfortable out there down the road.”
While bouncing back with a district win was important for Williams, doing it in front of their home crowd was even better.
“One thing I said to our guys before the game is that home court is important,” he said. “Our morale is up right now, and I think our chemistry is just going to keep getting better as the season goes on.”
Webb will be back in action on Thursday against the University School of Nashville with tip off to follow after the girl’s game ends.
