SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eagles opened District 9-AAAA play at home against the Coffee County Red Raiders, prevailing in overtime, 55-48, on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles outscored Coffee County, 11-4, in the extra session to pick up their first district win of the season. Jack Conditt scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the second half, and connected on a trio of three-pointers on the night. More importantly, he finished 5/6 at the free throw line for the game. Javon Lee chipped in with 12 first-half points to keep Shelbyville within striking distance of the visitors while Malik Johnson stepped up with 10 points on the night as well.
For Coffee County, this loss continued their now six-game losing streak, and their third-consecutive road defeat. The Red Raiders saw three players, Cayden Trail, Brady Wright, and Courtland Farrar, all finish with 13 points, but the team only managed to score 19 points in the second half against Shelbyville’s stingy defense.
To start the game, Coffee County took a meager two-point lead, 15-13, into the second quarter. In that second quarter of play, the Red Raiders extended their lead by outscoring Shelbyville, 14-10, to take a 29-23 lead into the halftime locker room.
With Tae’Shawn Shelton in foul trouble and Jordan Taylor only having three first half points, Shelbyville was kept afloat thanks to Lee’s aggressive attacks on the Red Raiders’ basket. Coming out of halftime, the Golden Eagles knew they needed to be ultra-aggressive, and they rose to the challenge.
Shelbyville put together an impressive third quarter, outscoring Coffee County, 16-8, while getting to the free throw line early and often. The Golden Eagles shot 10/11 at the charity stripe in the quarter to actually take the lead, 39-37, heading into the final frame.
However, in the fourth quarter, Shelbyville only managed to score five points, but their defense managed to at least force overtime by holding the Red Raiders to just seven points of their own. With the score knotted at 44-44, the Golden Eagles took the early lead and then finished things off by going 6/10 at the free throw line, coming away with the hard-fought 55-48 victory.
Coffee County falls to 6-11 (0-1).
