SHELBYVILLE — Despite managing just four points in the first quarter, the Shelbyville Central managed to cut the Hillwood lead to single digits at multiple points, including into the third quarter.
But a strong finish by the Hilltoppers nixed any chance of a comeback as the Eagles took a tough one on the chin, 75-48, on Monday night.
The Eagles’ lone field goal of the first quarter came on a Joe Harris three-pointer.
Trailing 16-4 after the first quarter, the Eagles out-scored the visitors 11-9, with four different Eagles tallying points in the second quarter.
Still, Hillwood clung to a 25-15 lead at the break.
But mid-way through the third quarter, Hillwood was able to execute on the scoreboard, scoring via points in transition, dribble penetration and from the perimeter.
In the third, Hillwood piled on 23 more points, while the Eagles went for 16 in the quarter.
That trend continued into the fourth frame with the Hilltoppers closing on a 27-17 run.
Terrence Johnson was the only Eagle to reach double figures and he lead the home team with 10 points.
Harris was hot on his heels with nine.
As a team, the Eagles connected on seven treys, with Johnson sinking a pair of triples.
Shelbyville also went 70% from the free throw line as well.
Hillwood’s Derek Curtis and Calvin Goliday combined for 51 points to lead the visitors.
Shelbyville is back on its home court tonight, hosting Tullahoma at 7:30 p.m.
