James L. (Jimmy) Lawen Jr., age 49, of Shelbyville, passed from this life on Friday, September 3, 2021.

A native of the Philippines, Jimmy was born October 30, 1971, to the late James L. Lawen Sr. and the late Aurora Monesit Lawen and was preceded in death by his brothers, Albert and Angel Lawen.

Jimmy was a graduate of Auburn University where he received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for General Electric, Power Industry Consulting, Wood Group, and then EthosEnergy. Jimmy’s career started in gas turbine engine design, where he received several patents and then moved into Applications engineering, long-term contract negotiations, and many other things that none of us fully understand.  Most recently, Jimmy was a Senior Vice President of EthosEnergy.

Jimmy’s passions were loving and supporting his family, mentoring and teaching in the church, maintaining his farm, and designing and building all sorts of things.  He loved making elaborate plans, but not necessarily finishing all of them.

Jimmy will live on through the impossible example he left for those behind, as well as his many long lectures, notebooks filled with lessons, and numerous words of wisdom and love for those around him.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 28 years, Candice Anderson Lawen of Shelbyville; children, Justin, Caleb (and his wife Karah and their son Milo) of Winchester, Sarah Ashlyn (and her fiancé Brian), Dakota, Jaxon, Atticus, Maddox, Zoe and Rosie of Shelbyville. He is also survived by his brother Tony (his wife Roselynne) and their children Clarissa and Lydia of Greenville, S.C.; brother-in-law Philip (his wife Heather) and their children Joey, Jacob, Alexis, and Lily of Huntsville, Ala.; Mother-in-law Phyllis Anderson of Shelbyville; and stepfather Sherman Herring of Hartselle, Ala.

Memorial donations may be made to: Jovenes en Camino (via Highland Hills Church of Christ); Auburn Christian Student Center; Arrowhead Boys Ranch in Normandy, Tennessee.

Doak-Howell Funeral Home is serving the family.
