Funeral services for Joseph Thurston “Joe” Farrar, 86, of Flat Creek community, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2022, in the chapel of Doak-Howell Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Ashley officiating. Burial will follow in Rosebank Cemetery in Flat Creek. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.
Mr. Farrar passed from this life Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Lynchburg Nursing Center.
A native of Bedford County, Mr. Farrar was born March 30, 1934, to the late James “Jim” Farrar and Virginia Dance Farrar. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by: beloved wife of 44 years, Frances Elizabeth Wheeler Farrar; sister, Nancy Farrar Ward; and brothers, Mark Freeman Farrar and James Holt Farrar.
Joe was a lifelong farmer in the Flat Creek community, raising mainly beef cattle. He graduated from Shelbyville Central High School and served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the founding board of Bedford County Bank and on Bedford County Soil Conservation Board for many years. After retirement, he continued farming and served as a tour guide for Jack Daniels Distillery. He enjoyed the farm life, spending time with his family and friends, relaxing on his porch, listening to his favorite radio station AM 650, SEC football games, and attending services at First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, where he was a faithful member, and New Hope Chapel.
Survivors include: daughter, Annice Whitt Coop of Shelbyville; grandsons, Thomas Gary Coop of Flat Creek, Joseph Jeremy Coop of Shelbyville; great-grandchildren, Weston Thomas Coop and Berkley Clare Coop; sisters, Mary Virginia Farrar of Alabama and Martha Sue Ervin of Tullahoma; along with several nieces and nephews.
