To the editor:

This Letter to the Editor references a column written by reader Charles David Sliger (special to T-G) on May 14 and can be found here. 

I find it concerning that Mr. Sliger; thirsty of opportunity to undeniably charge “Antifa actions in American cities” as “cowardly [and] criminal” without listing any American city as an example, especially when used for comparison as to why President Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus.

Mr. Sliger meticulously skirts significant facts on his roller coaster like journey to convince the reader of his analysis. While it is true that Chief Justice Taney issued a comment on the matter, Mr. Sliger failed to inform us that the comment was issued while Chief Justice Taney was acting as a federal circuit judge. Therefore, SCOTUS never issued an opinion on the matter. President Lincoln was seconded in his reasoning for decision and was also given approval by Congress. Thank God the United States survived.

Now for the reason I have found it profoundly important to refute you comes with your closing statements. In what utopian fairytale are you a citizen of where you can compare a leaked document to having the same profound impact as “rioters, criminals, and murders running rampart”?

Also, you speak as though “rioters, criminals, and murders” are a new phenomenon and never before has been experienced by past generations. The real sad state of affairs is your failure to mention and reject the attempted coup d’état on January 6, 2021 at the US Capitol as a dark and unprecedented day in our history—a day that was the biggest strain of the US Constitution since the firing on of Ft. Sumter.

Perhaps you should shift your interest to writing about failed governments and not about trying to destroy current governments.
