COALMONT — A monster first half by Grundy County was more than the Cascade Lady Champions were able to overcome in a District 7-AA loss to the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Grundy County placed just seven players in double figures, but five of the seven hit double figures and the hosts downed the Lady Champions, 65-42.
Right out of the gates, Grundy County jumped out to a 12-point lead with a 20-point effort in the first quarter.
Cascade struggled to get open looks from the floor in the first half, but was able to work its way to the free throw line thanks to the efforts of Caroline Stone.
Of Cascade’s eight first-quarter points, Stone connected on 4-of-6 attempts at the charity stripe.
The lone first-quarter field goal came courtesy of Jordan Green in the first frame.
Grundy County, meanwhile, saw Kaylee Smartt connected on a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers to balance the Lady Yellow Jacket offense.
After racing out to a 20-8 lead in the first frame, the hosts stretched their lead to 26 points by halftime with a 23-point second quarter.
In the second frame, Grundy County connected on another three 3-pointers in the quarter.
Cascade, meanwhile, struggled to match pace and was only able to add another nine points before the half.
Scoring slowed down considerably in the second half for Grundy County.
Cascade rallied in the third frame and out-scored the Lady Yellow Jackets, 10-7 in the third period and matched the 15-point effort by the hosts in the fourth quarter.
Carlee Smartt led all scorers with 15 points, while Wrylee McDaniel and Kaylee Smartt added 12 apiece.
Abigail Childers and Jaidys McDaniel chipped in 10 apiece for Grundy County.
Caroline Stone led two Lady Champions in double figures with 13 points, while Sophie Ray added 10.
While offense was a struggle at times, Cascade did prove effective at the free throw line and cashed in on 19-of-27 attempts.
Cascade will be back in action on Tuesday night, looking for its first District 7-AA win at Forrest.
