BELL BUCKLE — Coming off a 10-day break and a loss, the Webb Lady Feet bounced back with a dominant 72-19 victory over the Grace Christian Academy Lady Lions for their first Division II-A victory of the season.
“Obviously, you always want to rebound after a loss,” Lady Feet assistant coach Darvin Gill said. “It was important for us to come out tonight and play well after the long Thanksgiving break. We’ve had some sickness throughout the squad, so it was good to get back out here tonight.”
Webb (2-1, 1-0) got off to a quick start by scoring 21 points in the opening quarter while holding Grace Christian (3-3, 0-1) to only two points in the frame.
The Lady Feet dropped three perimeter shots through the net in the first quarter with six different players logging points.
It was much of the same in the second quarter as Webb added 20 more points to their total while again holding Grace Christian to only two points to carry a 41-4 lead into the halftime break.
Much of their success came on the defensive end by forcing turnovers and grabbing defensive rebounds to limit the Lady Lions’ second chances which is a point of emphasis for the coaching staff.
“Defense and rebounding are very important for us,” Gill said. “We feel like to be a really good team, you have to play well on both sides of the ball. We work a lot on our defense, and sometimes it shows but sometimes it doesn’t.”
With a near 40-point lead in hand at the half, Gill used the opportunity to give the starters a rest and give the others some valuable floor time.
And they didn’t miss a beat as they scored 31 points in the second half with eight bench players scoring in the game.
Rhema Collins led the Lady Feet with 11 points, and Tati Stovall was close behind with 10 points off the bench.
“It’s very nice when we can put our bench players in and play well,” Gill said. “If we have the opportunity to put them in, we’re going to because everyone on this team works as hard as the next person. To be well-rounded when it matters, everyone on the team has to be prepared to step up when we need them to.”
Cohesion is a staple for the Lady Feet this season being that the majority of their team has been playing together for the last few seasons, and it shows on the court night in and night out.
“There’s no substitute for cohesion, and you get that when you’re around the same people all the time,” Gill said. “There’s a lot of camaraderie and chemistry on this team right now.”
