Late Viqueen rally falls short

Posted
UNIONVILLE — The Community Viqueens cut a 15-point fourth quarter deficit to six with under two minutes to go, but it was as close as the Viqueens would get as the Huntland Lady Hornets took a 58-48 win in a basketball contest Tuesday night.
Two scoring droughts were instrumental as the Viqueen four-game winning streak to start the season was snapped.
Community (4-1) scored the first five points of the game before the Lady Hornets matched the Viqueen output to tie the game at 5-5.
The Viqueens would not lead in the game again as Huntland took a 17-12 lead to the second quarter.
The Viqueens went 4:17 in the quarter without a point as the Lady Hornets raced to a 27-14 lead.  Haley Mitchell scored the last eight Viqueen points as Community cut the Lady Hornet lead to 32-22 at the half.
"We had a lot of turnovers and they were getting points out of those turnovers and it put us behind," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
Another Viqueen cold spell, this one lasting 3:44 to start the third quarter enabled Huntland to take its biggest lead at 39-22.
M.J. Simmons scored the next eight Viqueen points as Community trailed the Lady Hornets 42-31 heading to the final quarter.
The Lady Hornets appeared to be coasting with a 48-33 lead and 3:39 remaining, but the Viqueens went on a spurt.
Simmons scored nine points in the quarter and Jacey Collier came off the bench to score five points in the span of 23 seconds as Community trailed the Lady Hornets 51-45 with 1:38 left.
The Viqueens would not get closer as Huntland pushed its lead back to 10 and took the win.
"Our pressure gave us a chance, but we ran out of gas and gave up a couple of layups at the end," Pierce said.
Logan McClennan scored 20 points to lead the Lady Hornets while Jocy May added 18.
Simmons led all scorers with 21 points while Mitchell added 13 for the Viqueens.
Huntland was 12-of-17 at the free throw line while the Viqueens were 14-of-17.
Community hosts Central Magnet Thursday night.  Game time is 6 p.m.
