Community junior Jemima Ramos had a chance to give the Viqueens a lead during a first-half penalty kick attempt against rival Cascade (0-1-1) on Monday evening.
Her penalty kick shot ricocheted off the right post and the Viqueens (2-0-0) were denied the early scoring chance.
She eventually found the back of the net on the eventual game winner in the second half as the Purple and Gold took down Cascade in a 2-1 thriller.
In the 23rd minute,Lady Champ goal keeper, Tori Hull, came out of the goal and inadvertently wiped out a Viqueen striker on a breakaway and was issued a yellow card, forcing Cascade to substitute a goal keeper for the impending penalty kick.
The kick, however, pegged the right post and Cascade was spared during the scoring opportunity.
Nearly the same instance repeated itself on the opposite end of the field when the Viqueens repeated the penalty scenario, setting up a Rachel Phillips penalty kick.
Cascade, however, made good on the attempt and went up, 1-0.
The physical tone of the game continued into the second half until the Viqueens were able to connect on the equalizer off a corner kick in the 54th minute.
Lexi Molnar took the corner and put a well-placed shot into the box, which Sara Beth Stacy settled and Brianna Beech finished to the back of the net for the equalizer.
Community continued to press the attack on the Lady Champion end of the field and dominated the possession until Ramos rocketed a shot from 25 yards out to the back of the net for the game-winner.
“We played well today, but just didn’t have the gas in the tank,” Lady Champion coach Zack Spears said.
“I am proud of my girls and it is good to see them continue to get better. I think we are definitely moving in the right direction.”
Viqueen coach Chris Brothers was pleased with his team’s mental fortitude to not fold when falling behind in the first half.
“Great, hard-fought game by both teams. Really proud of our girls for not quitting and fighting back,” he said.
Community will be back in action tonight for the 2020 home opener against Huntland at 6 p.m., while Cascade gets a break until September 8, when the Lady Champs return to action at Forrest.
