“Roaches” are still marijuana, as a driver found out when cited for possession Tuesday.

Deputy David Burns of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office smelled marijuana after stopping Colby Allen for an expired license plate on Highway 64 East.

Twelve partially smoked marijuana cigarettes were found in an ash tray and two glass bongs containing marijuana residue were in the truck’s back seat, Burns said.

Allen was cited and released. He told Burns he thought “roaches” were no longer considered to be marijuana.

Three Learning Way Elementary School students were slightly injured in a fight on a Bedford County Schools bus Tuesday morning, police said.

The students were receiving treatment inside an ambulance when officers arrived at a Wartrace Pike condominium complex in response to the bus driver’s 911 call.

Classes had just been let out for the Christmas break when the fight began around 9:20 a.m.

The students’ stories differed as to who started the fight, but indications were that it stemmed from name-calling, police said.

An unruly student petition was filed against the alleged instigator.
