Second half powers Viqueens' 1st win

UNIONVILLE —The Community Viqueens trailed at halftime after a sluggish first half but righted the ship with a 45-point second half as the Viqueens opened the season with a 65-49 win over the Fayetteville Lady Tigers in a Hall of Champions contest Tuesday night.
In a quarter of runs, the Viqueens got off to a fast start with a 6-0 run in the first minute of the opening quarter to take a 6-1 lead.
The Viqueen offense stalled for a bit as the Lady Tigers went on a 9-0 run to take a 10-6 advantage before Community scored the final five points of the quarter to take an 11-10 lead to the second quarter. Viqueen fouls played a role in the quarter as Community had trouble finding the basket.
The Lady Tigers took advantage and outscored the Viqueens 13-9 to take a 23-20 lead into the intermission.
"Right off the bat, we had three starters with two fouls and got some minutes out of the bench," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said.
"That's always going to be key in a full season to sub a little bit and get some good minutes," Pierce added.
With the help of a scoring spree by freshman Anna Haskins, the Viqueens took control in the third quarter.
Haskins scored 10 consecutive points for the Viqueens, including two straight three-point plays as Community broke out of a 25-25 tie to take a lead it would not lose.
M.J. Simmons scored six points from the post as the Viqueens outscored the Lady Tigers 23-11 to take a 43-34 lead to the final quarter.
The Viqueens were 11-15 from the free throw in the quarter as Community gradually increased its lead.  Haley Mitchell had seven points while Simmons and Zoey Dixon each had five as the Viqueens took their biggest lead at 63-46 before settling for the 16-point win.
Simmons and Haskins each scored 18 points to lead the Viqueens while Mitchell added 12.
Trinity Dixon led the Lady Tigers with 14 points while Isabella Martin added 11.
The Viqueens were 15-of-21 at the free throw line while Fayetteville was 14-of-21.
"I felt like we played with some nerves which is expected but I felt like we got some of that out last week playing a couple of scrimmages," Pierce said.
"We settled in and made a few adjustments and dominated them in the paint in the second half," Pierce added.
Community travels to Jackson County for another Hall of Champions game Thursday night.  Game time is 6 p.m.
