Shotgun goes off during argument

Charges were filed against a suspect accused of firing a shotgun during an argument Sunday night on El Bethel Road.
Andrea Lee Cantrell, 31, is charged with reckless endangerment and aggravated assault, according to Bedford County Sheriff’s Office incident reports. She was held on $25,000 bond.
The victim told investigators a male friend of Cantrell hit him in the mouth with the gun’s muzzle outside her home during an argument over money. The friend has not been charged.
Both men were on the ground fighting after the victim grabbed the gun and threw it aside, the victim said. Eventually the victim hit the male attacker in the face with a jack handle.
At that point Cantrell grabbed the gun and it fired, the reports say. The victim said Cantrell fired at him as he was going to his truck, which he drove directly to the Sheriff’s Office. He was not struck by a bullet.
Cantrell at first denied having a gun, then told a deputy she picked it up to take inside her home and it accidentally fired.
She feared getting in trouble and threw the shotgun out the window of her vehicle on El Bethel Road while driving with her friend to Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital for treatment of injuries from the fight, said one of the reports. The victim was told by an emergency medical technician he needed stitches for a cut lip but refused treatment.
The gun was recovered by a deputy.
Drug charges
•Drugs were found in a vehicle after the driver allegedly evaded a Shelbyville police officer during a vehicle pursuit Sunday morning.
Abigail May Thomas Utz, 42, who is listed in the Bedford County Jail intake report as homeless and from Shelbyville, was allegedly driving without a seat belt when spotted by Officer Brandi Merlo on Dover Street.
Merlo said she saw Utz grab the belt after seeing the patrol car. Utz allegedly sped up when Merlo began pursuit with lights and siren on narrow Shelby Circle.
Utz’s vehicle was allegedly “almost on two wheels” at one point — with a bag being thrown out — as a short pursuit ended at the end of a wooded trail off Dover Street, Merlo’s report said.
Officer James Sharp located Utz a few minutes later in a wooded area nearby. Officers searched the bag and found smaller bags containing methamphetamine, marijuana and suboxone strips along with syringes Utz allegedly said contained more methamphetamine.
Utz was charged with possession of schedule II and III drugs and paraphernalia, drving while in possession of a schedule II drug, evading by motor vehicle and violation of the seat belt law. She was held on $100,000 bond.
•Marijuana was confiscated from a vehicle after a Bedford County deputy noticed an expired license plate and made a traffic stop Saturday on Highway 231 North.
Hannah Louise Green, 22, of Manchester admitted ownership of two bags, containing a total of 3.67 grams of marijuana, and other drug paraphernalia found in the vehicle, Deputy Hamp Vaughn’s report said.
Green was charged with possession of schedule VI drug, possession of drug paraphernalia. She was released on $5,500 bond.
•A suspect who told police he was living in his vehicle on Cowan Avenue was arrested shortly after midnight Sunday morning when he allegedly dropped methamphetamine in a pill bottle onto the ground.
Shelbyville officers were called to investigate several people allegedly sleeping in their vehicles and blocking the roadway. Thomas Wayne Owens, 43, Cowan Avenue, is accused of dropping the bottle as he was being patted down.
Owens was charged with possession of schedule II drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on $5,500 bond.
Thefts
•A black and white Next mountain bike was stolen between June 26 and Monday from the front yard of an Orchard Lane home.
A suspect was named and the theft is not thought to be random, a BCSO report said.
Also reported to area law enforcement:
•Three containers of fishing lures were stolen Sunday from a tackle box at Fishermen’s Park.
•The battery was stolen from a newly-purchased electric bicycle Saturday in the kitchen of an Elm Street residence, police said.
•A propane tank, lawn mower and several unspecified items were stolen during June from a shed at a home on Academy Lane, a sheriff’s office report said.
The owner named a suspect, who had been present earlier when deputies and Shelbyville police officers recovered a vehicle stolen from Van Buren County at a home on Coleman Harvey Road.
